I find all wine to be awful. I sit here with the Barossa to the north of me and McLaren Vale to the south, some of my friends are sommeliers, I even get sent free wine. But I hate it. Typical.
If you can afford it Amarone, Barolo and Brunello di Montalcino are heavenly Italian reds. Like an angel crying on your tongue. Alternatively something much cheaper is a stonkin' Aussie red called '19 Crimes'. Don't buy it a £9 as it is usually in Tesco at £7.
I quite like a ribera del duero. My sister's partner introduced me to it when we visited them in Spain a few years ago, very nice indeed.
I've just returned from a 3 week skiing trip to Austria. Whilst there we consumed several vats of Blauer Zweigelt, a superb Austrian wine. Wunderbar.
Excellent recommendations, George Kerr, but if you can find a bottleof any of those under 15 quid, be afraid, be very afraid....
Any red wine I've bought has tasted like medicine; however, I have had excellent red wine in Portugal and Italy when others have chosen it.
which triggers a memory of the teacher who took us for 'scripture' or 'religious education at White Cross in the sixties. The discussion was on the miracle of turning water into wine and the teacher made comment that they brought out the best wines first during the festivities. "Does anybody know why they serve the best wines first?" the nine tenyearolds got it... (rate the telling of this memory out of ten.... and I will learn from it)
10 for that , I assume the answer from you was they drunk the best first before it got nicked , had many a Chateau John Smiths in Swaithe Club
