Ha ha. Great result Sammy (not that I’m pleased about it!). The Barnsley Education system eh! Produces some gonks.
My step mum and her family support Rangers and I would say they are the least bigoted people I know - of course there are people who support Rangers who are bigoted as there are with a lot of clubs, but to generalise and say "anyone" makes you look daft mate
I get Scottish people supporting them (albeit many only because they're the only teams that win anything) but quite a few Barnsley/English folk seem to do as well, mainly Rangers so they can be bigoted toward Catholics/the pope. Very strange behaviour.
Unless you were born and brought up a Rangers or Celtic fan I can't think of a reasonable argument for supporting either of them.
I was brought up in West Yorkshire but support the Reds who are in South Yorkshire, i can't see what the problem is. What about all the THOUSANDS of Man Utd supporters from all over the UK?
Fully agree about the Man U "fans". Leaving all the bigotry of both teams' fans out of the argument I just find it baffling that anyone could choose to support one of the overwhelmingly dominant teams in Scotland. Those two clubs have rendered the whole of Scottish football meaningless in terms of actual competition. Cities like Edinburgh, Dundee Aberdeen are light years away from being able to challenge. It's not the fault of Rangers or Celtic but there's surely far more clubs deserving of a neutral's support than those two. I don't get where the joy of victory can come from. It's like flipping a coin and celebrating because you picked the right one in a 50/50 chance. I'm in the minority I know. The number of Irish blokes wandering round in Man U, Liverpool, Arsenal shirts continues to baffle me. I just don't understand where any real joy can possibly come from.
Met Rangers Dave on holiday when we were kids. Sent us a scottish tenner every Christmas for the next 10 years. Top bloke. Mon the Gers.
It’s a ‘gut thing’. I was born in Barnsley. Went to my first game in 1970 when I was 7. Always had a soft spot for Celtic from watching Sam Leitch on Football Focus, showing film of Jimmy Johnstone running round 3 defenders before putting in a perfect cross. Then saw them in England at a few testimonials and a replayed game against Rapid Vienna at Old Trafford. Those games brought me into contact with the extraordinary level of support, and where it came from. Calling at a pub in Tintwhistle on a Sunday morning at 10 am to find 6 coach loads of Celtic supporters from the Southampton branch of the CSC is impressive to say the least. Then there’s the first visit to Celtic Park. Walking into that old bowl of a ground with 60,000 others for the first time did give me that ‘gut feeling’. The atmosphere at so many games is simply amazing. Some of the European games against Barcelona, Milan, Juve, Man Utd and Liverpool have been off the scale, unlike anything I’ve experienced in over 50 years of watching football. Then there’s the games v Rangers (and more recently - Sevco!). Love them or hate them, there is nothing like them for intensity anywhere on the planet. More so when you’re travelling up from all parts of England and Ireland along with another 10,000+ who are making the same journey. Not everyone’s cup of tea but the politics also does play a part for me. My politics are ‘on the left’ shall we say and when you follow Celtic, it is made perfectly clear that if you don’t come from that persuasion you might not always feel very comfortable. It’s part of the ethos of the fan base. Anti Establishment, anti unionist, awkward and cussed. That’s not to say they don’t have their share of numpties - a fan base that big can’t avoid that, but the vast majority of fans I’ve come into contact with have been ‘good guys’ In empathy with those who have it a bit tougher in life, whether in this Country or others. I’m not after converting anyone, just trying to give some reasons why (both) teams have such fanatical support from so many different parts of the world. I’ve never had a problem squaring my allegiance to Barnsley with my support for Celtic and I’ll be there tomorrow (today!) sat in the Ponty - being miserable with the other 7,000, biding my time until happier times come along. Ps Conway out.
