I'd very much hope it's the starting point to create a database and populate it with appearance data. I mentioned it many moons ago and appreciate it would take effort, but the club statistician will have most if not all the data already, it's essentially a case of data entry and time. A bit of a shame that some of the players only have a surname or an initial.
Nothing we can do about the latter, other than to keep researching and continue digging. Your other point about populating it with more data would not be possible for quite a number of the players, but it’s something we are working to include over time. This is the launch remember. We are only the second club to do it, for good reason.
Was/is there a lot of incomplete data? If so, that surprises me given some of the books published over the years. And fully appreciate some of the players back at the very start of the club or around the war years will have been very hard to find and you're likely having to dig into local registry records for some of them. It wasn't a criticism, just that it's sad, the ones in particular where you just see their surnames. A little like where you see a worn headstone in a cemetery.
The only thing I can't get my head around is why it's called an Alumni when none of these were scholars or graduates.
It's definitely an itch we'll continue to scratch. And believe me, Dave Wood is the best man for the job. But as stated on the Alumni page itself, if any fans can help us fill in any gaps, with missing names etc, we'd appreciate it. The data set will come in time. But again, it'll not be for all 1,376 players. I wish I had been around to see Fred Coupe though. Bet he was nippy. And Ginger Phoenix! What a name.
It's just a fancy name. It's so we can use terms like "members of our Alumni" when referencing former players as guests etc. Like we've been able to do when referring to Danny Wilson et al as 'Hall of Famer, Danny Wilson' after we launched that. Good for marketing.
I find it amazing that this is something that a hell a lot of work has been put into and people are picking spots with it.
Great stuff from the club and some brilliant work from Dave Wood. First on the list I saw was no.671 - not a bad start!
I don't know what others feelings are... but I'd certainly be amenable to see data starting to populate tables and know it is a work in progress, rather than wait for something to be completely finished. And in the interim, you could always have smaller lists/tables that record our goalscorers and maybe centurions. But I'm glad it's just the start and not just a chronological list. Legacy is not just a name, but what they did and how they contributed to our history. A huge piece of work. But I can't think of anything more important or fulfilling than creating something that allows a baton to be passed along through time.
I'm proud that in the last four years, we've established the Hall of Fame and now the Alumni. But yes, there's a hell of a lot more that could be added, from a historical POV. And I will continue to give it my best attention while ever I'm here. But the main focus in my role, 99% of it pretty much, is on the here and now. But yeah. I think the fact we launched the HOF in 2018, and now have the Alumni in place, we have the foundations I guess, and we build from there.
Just one last thing.... on the Hall of Fame. Is that returning to something more formal and regular? And do you know when the next induction will be and how many are likely to be introduced?
