Another embarrassing collapse, with all bar Lees getting themselves out. I genuinely cannot see how Root can continue. I know there’s the argument that nobody else is guaranteed a place in the team, but I’m not sure there ever will be while he’s captain. We need a new captain and coach that can get through to these players that what they are doing is unacceptable, and be able to help improve them as players. Whoever picked the squad can get his coat as well. Staggering level of arrogance to think we could just discard over a thousand wickets.
I said Root should have gone after the ashes and nothing I've seen in the West Indies has made me change my mind. He's not a leader, he can't seem to get any performances out of these players. The west indies are OK but the way have England have capitulated is unacceptable.
Wish that Lees could have reached an half century. In his six innings he's been out in the 30s three times and faced over hundred balls twice.
Mayers reminds me of that Aussie trundler who seemed to have no trouble getting 5 for 2 or 3 runs almost every time he bowled. Nothing special, both of them, but our batsmen have crumbled each time. I just don’t understand it!
I think the writing was on the wall in the summer when we made Indian tailenders with single figure averages look like Sobers and Botham. I can’t think of any trait that he has that you need for a captain. He doesn’t have the tactical nous of Vaughan, the calmness under pressure of Cook, the man management of Strauss, or the discipline of Hussain. He’s actually damaging careers, particularly of the bowlers. And between him and the coaching staff, there seems to be nothing by way of support to help batters make the step up.
So who should be captain? He does have one quality, he leads by example on the field, has the determination to get a solid innings when all are crumbling around him. He's not there to coach, but he encourages, listens to his vice captains. Trouble is, we just haven't got any other players at his level who can play a full test series now , Anderson is too old, Stokes has been injured and struggling with his mental health.
One of the most encouraging things to come from this tour has been Stokes magnificent century and the number of overs he’s bowled ( 29 in second test ). Perhaps his physical and mental health doubts are now over ? His attitude has never been in question so is it now the time to step up from his vice captaincy role ? Root should/ will resign captaincy for our home games
I’d give it to Broad and have Stokes fill in for any games that he can’t play. Wouldn’t be surprised if Root wanted to pack in the captaincy anyway. He’s done it 5 years now, with a fair portion of that spent moving from bubble to bubble. It’s not fair on him or the team to keep him as captain by default.
