I hope it doesn't diminish his batting performances!

Based on the interview he gave on 28th March, I’d suggest he hasn’t ‘stepped down’

If that's what he wants then ok he's had a good run. I hope he has not been pushed because of the Yorkshire ccc record in racism.

Congratulations to him. He can be the worlds best batter for the next 5 years now without worry. This will help the team long term

He's apparently spoken to his family and it's his decision. If Stokes says no I can't see another option.

Although he has the record for most test wins, his tenure has been indifferent to say the least, there is absolutely no doubting his batting prowess, but, when it really mattered his captaincy wasn't aggressive enough.
He will go down as a truly great batsman, but not a truly great captain.

Not surprising, given the run of results, the fact he’s been in the job for five years and that two of those have been spent in bubbles.

If it’s not Stokes that takes over, I reckon the options are Broad, Vince or Billings.

I doubt it. More to do with results I'd have thought.

Personally think it's the consequence of the Anderson/Broad fiasco. Root put his foot down and has paid the price.

That’s good, I really like Joe but for me tactically he was always on the ‘safe’ side and lacked imagination.
Hopefully he can now concentrate on his batting and clock up the runs for many more years.

As long as they appoint a much better captain. At least he was never taking up a place as captain when his cricketing performance didnt warrant it.

Just heard this. Through vivid we played 17 tests all over the world. Aussies played 4, all at home.

About time, harsh I know but the team is going backwards, needs a plan and a new approach to selection. Although the ECB could help by not having so much meaningless cricket, it doesn't prepare people for test cricket.

I think he's been sacked and they have worded it the way they have to save face for him. The way he spoke after the Windies tour he wouldn't have made himself sound so stupid if he wasn't adamant he would be continuing. He deserves credit for trying to captain us through weakened squads with limited overs seen as more important and lots of pandemic bubbles and empty grounds.

It’ll be interesting to see if they reselect him for white ball games.
He would merit playing in ODI’s but not T20’s as he lacks the ability to up his scoring rate above a certain level like others.

I feel for Joe, he's captained with dignity and is England's winning-most captain whilst at the same time delivering a phenomenal amount of runs.

Again an individual who has given his all takes the rap for the appalling mismanagement and incompetence of the ECB which has left the second richest cricketing nation with no Test standard cricketers under the age of 30.

Some of the results Joe has achieved with the sub-par teams that he's had to lead are commendable. People vastly over-estimate the impact a captain can have in such circumstances.

It's been like having Ronnie Glavin in a team filled up with 10 Brek Sheas. Ronnie would still look sublime but the team overall would be abysmal.
