My daughter is moving to Brum and needs me as a guarantor for the new digs she's renting, I can't believe the information they require - Im fully expecting to be called for an interview and to have to give them my DNA/blood transfusion.
They need a payslip, proof of identy, proof of home ownership, proof of address, my bosses name and job and address. W, the actual F is going on??? Can I get them to destroy all this afterwards? Not that I don't trust some shtty estate agent in Birmingham probably running their database on Windows XP, but someone could hack that information and probably destroy my life.

Tbf you are acting as guarantor. To all intents and purposes they’re vetting you in the same way as they would the tenant. I know someone who lost around £3k in unpaid rent and about same again in repairs, because they got convinced by the tenants parents not to follow up on guarantor checks. Went to the parents to reclaim losses - denied all responsibility, and told them to prove they were legal guarantors.

Can’t be easy if you don’t have a parent willing or able to do it though. I wouldn’t want to ask a mate to back me financially if I needed to rent a house.

I agree. Luckily it's just been individual tenancies I've used to guarantee for mine as students, but in some areas you have to guarantee the whole house.
