And the national legal right to abortion will be gone, with it likely to become instantly illegal in 22 states.

Horrendous, and baffling that a country which kills its prisoners and is happy for its citizens to kill each other (and themselves) with guns draws the line at a bundle of cells.

3 Trumpers, 2 other conservative nutcases, 1 moderate conservative and 3 liberals.

The heinous part is the republicans blocking Obama's nominee for almost a year because "it's too close to the election" in 2016, and then forcing through Trump's nominee in record time weeks before the 2020 election.

It won't stop abortions - just legal ones. So more women will die, more will be made infertile, and more will be forced to carry children they don't want who will then suffer as a result.

It's strange how American conservatives apparently care so much about the life of an unborn child but then could not give less of a **** about its welfare after birth.

It's almost as if it's not really about the foetus but about subjugating women and policing their bodies...

Its very depressing living in this world at the moment. Im no great fan of abortion but there are definitely cases where its clearly appropriate and also I have a bit of a problem as a bloke dictating what Women can and cant do with their bodies
The thing which is most bizarre is the venn diagram of "Pro Live" pro guns and anti vax seems to be quite large which doesnt stack up to any rational thought.

The second most depressing thing is that often what happens in the USA is seized on by the Tories as a policy for over here - Don't be surprised to see the Fascist element of the Tory party start to push for this here next.

Whenever you see "pro life" substitute "pro controlling women" and everything makes a lot more sense.

Its a difficult one, clearly the agenda of the people pushing the ban in the U.S isn't really the preservation of life otherwise they wouldn't be so keen on killing prisoners and letting people shoot each other with legal firearms. On the other hand I don't think abortion should be used as a contraception - and as easy to get hold of. There are obviously circumstances when its necessary, but abortion for convenience isn't something I can support. Its difficult to take an absolutist position either way and defend it.

I think it's easy to take a fairly absolutist position given the risks pregnancy poses to health, the magnitude of responsibility and consequence that comes from having a child and the fact that an embryo is not a child. The state should not force motherhood upon women, for me it's as simple as that.

Also "abortion for convenience" is a horrendous turn of phrase.

Exactly this. Unbelievable that they are turning the clock back like that, we did all about Rowe vs Wade back when I did Politics A level.

And yes @wakeyred if abortion is used as birth control that is still OK, my body my choice!

Horrible news. They can use religion, pro-life, or any other excuse, but it’s a worrying decision when one of the biggest, most developed countries in the world thinks this is the right thing to do. Then again, they do put profits before healthcare so it’s hardly surprising.

Just 1% of women obtain an abortion because they became pregnant through rape, and less than 0.5% do so because of incest.

We also have the morning after pill, condoms, birth control. People always push the 'poor women!' narrative, but maybe the majority (the 99%) could maybe take some responsibility in the first place, along with their male partners?

I'd probably say the later of 6 months or 2 weeks after the woman finds out she is pregnant.

You do know contraception isn't 100% effective, right?

Yes but I imagine the percentage of pregnancies as a result is incredibly small. I know there are certain circumstances where you could argue the point. But my body/my choice should also include choosing contraception.

I'm assuming that anyone who is in favour of banning/restricting abortion would also be in favour of a majority female Supreme Court passing a law whereby unless there is a signed record of the parties agreeing to procreate the father is obliged to pay full compensation for any medical complications suffered by the mother, and if the mother decides she doesn't want to raise the child then a coin is flipped to decide who is designated the primary parent and the other parent's obligations extend no further than any appropriate child maintenance payments.

So you don't have an absolute position on abortion then?
