It should be up to the batting side how much of a risk they want to take. It shouldn't be in the rules that a team can get off the pitch simply by refusing to play spinners. Cricket crowds get enough of a poor deal with sloppy over rates. Look at how now even IPL games can take nearly four hours.
Cricket is just going to eat itself if they can’t apply some common sense to situations like this. It should be the batting side who decide whether to play or not in this situation but they’re not even given the choice, Ok so Kent bowl some bouncers. We’d have to be in T20 mode to win it anyway so the batsmen just hook a few for 4 or 6. Where’s the problem. If they can’t properly use those expensive floodlights to finish a match why have them? I suppose Yorkshire should take some of the blame again though for not declaring early and then letting the opposition stack up the runs. Very poor finish to the match.
we just didn't capitalise on the early wickets yesterday coupled with rauf off injured, we didn't bowl well either side of tea allowing them an extra 50 runs or so plus - 30/45 mins of play, even then it was a kent error to give us some hope, it was just 1 of those things that happens in cricket and dare say if boot on the other foot we'd have been cheering, i did wonder about the umpires call about bad light though, comm mentioned a black cloud stuck above but did it deteriorate that much in the time it took between innings? in the spirit of the game we could have been given a few overs to test the light, but the laws overruled it
https://www.yorkshireccc.com/news/view/9878/preview-essex-vs-yorkshire-lvcc Root back in the side. Hill to be the fall guy even though he made a 150 the other week? Coad back in the squad with Rauf out but hopefully back next week for the Roses clash. Gotta be careful of Mark Steketee. He's another brilliant Aussie seam bowler like Daniel Sams and Riley Meredith that can't get a look in for Australia because of the talent above them.
Do you think there’s a chance that Hill will play and Bess will be left out ? Root may put a shift in as spinner ??
That would have been an option. Surprisingly as the bowling have let us down in the past two games they have brought him in for Rauf so the batting is even stronger but the bowling attack looks softer. Patterson has struggled to declare recently so it's probably a good idea that this time he won't have the chance to set a target. When you have Brook at six it's a strong batting line up.
Batting has been great for us all season, so it's looking poor at the moment when we didn't replace Rauf like for like and chose instead to make batting even stronger.
cooky just gone 107, what a class player he is, would still walk straight into the current england set up
A pretty rubbish day so far. Putting a team into bat you really should get them out for 200-250. We have a bowling attack made up 4/5 bowlers and it shows with the struggle we have taking 20 wickets. I know there’s been injuries but the team selection for this game is pretty negative as they seem to be playing for a draw.
You could argue that we bat down to number 10 ( Patterson averages 16 ! ) so why didn’t we bat first ?
I can only imagine that due to injuries in the bowling attack they’ve thought ‘let’s see if we can get lucky with early wickets on a day 1 pitch and then bat them out the game. If they bat well then we’ll have enough batting strength to take time out the game and get a draw’. They know this bowling attack isn’t capable of taking 20 wickets when the conditions don’t suit so bowling on day 1 was the only option.
Can see why you normally get a knighthood after you finish playing, commentators saying Sir Alistair Cook all the time !
Ben Stokes in unreal form this morning. Hit 34 off one over (6,6,6,6,6,4) and 147* off 82 balls at lunch. He’s hit 15 sixes in this innings. The record amount of sixes in a SEASON for Durham is 19!
Scored 210 runs in the morning session. Stokes and Bedingham have scored a 189 run partnership Stokes has scored 147 of those runs.
