He sounds like someone who’s just got into football to fit in with his mates down the pub. I bet when he was playing the sum total of his instructions were “just wait on the wing until someone passed you the ball Steve then run forward with it and either cross or shoot.”
After his first couple of appearances, my brother and I actually nicknamed him "Bobby Floyd Hassellw@nk". We were both absolutely convinced that he was never, ever going to make it as a professional footballer at Barnsley. How wrong we were.
He wouldn’t be my first choice if I’m honest, but compared to the usual source of managers this ownership group have employed, he’s a more attractive proposition solely because he’s experienced in English football, and particularly knows league one very well. He could come in and identify immediately what we will need to compete in games next season. There are others I’d sooner be looked at - Matt Taylor, Rob Edwards, even a Nigel Clough or Nigel Adkins. (I know Adkins wouldn’t be agreed with by some but I think he’d be a good appointment). But failing all those Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink is more attractive than people like Vrancken or Blessin (where did his name come from? He’s managing in Serie A, why would he come to league one? The answer being he’ll likely get sacked if Genoa go down) who have been linked; and I don’t think it’s likely we’ll tempt Warnock or McCarthy to come. I also can’t see Stendel coming back, and I’m not sure I’d want him to. We are a lot weaker going in to league one this time and I worry he’d be of the thought he could just do what he did last time out.
I'm also one where he isn't first on my list but when you look at his managerial history, he is as others have mentioned, a more attractive candidate. He's got great experience of the EFL and what it takes to be competitive and shown that by winning League 2 with Burton before getting them to 1st the following season before taking a lot bigger job with QPR which you can't begrudge him doing. Yes he's done okay with Burton in the last 18 months but I don't think he had the budget this season to get them into the top half of League 1 so another mid table finish with them is a decent season. He may see us as a club that needs a rebuild but he will have better players to work with ( no offence to Burton ) that's already at the club and will have more finances to use ( I know it won't be the highest in League 1 but definitely more than 2/3 of the clubs next season ) to bring in players that will make us competitive and hopefully within a couple of seasons, get us back to the Championship. He's definitely a manager with a point to prove as many have written him off after his time with QPR then Northampton, and I also see him as someone who won't put up with any BS and will demand a lot from the players.
I don't know about miss spell, but Mark the Pitsmoor Owl on Radio Sheffield will definitely be the first to miss pronounce it.
Clough would be a good choice but is currently at Mansfield who apparently have some financial backing so doubt he'd leave them for us. Adkins is at Charlton (I think?) and again I couldn't see him leaving them for us. We aren't much of an attraction right now.
Ah...right, I didn't know that. Not sure I'd want him to be honest. Seems to me like his best managerial days are behind him now.
I used to always be up to date with most football comings and goings. Not this season, for some reason I seemed to lose a lot of interest in the game in general. Can't think why........
