You're right Jay. That game against Walsall was one of the very best I've ever watched and Winnall's second was just an unforgettable moment.
The second half of that season was probably the last time I'll ever see the Reds on a regular basis and it was filled with magical moments.

Knows where the goal is, available on a free and still only 39 years old. I've heard he'd have no problem passing the bleep test. Worth a punt?

We've got Patrick Schmidt used properly by a head coach with a fully functioning brain and supported by a midfield that creates he'll score for fun.

Oh but Edjsberg blah, blah, blah. The guys only proper run in the side coincided with the great escape.

    I see similarities with Winnall.

There's a slight problem with this. Multiple coaches have looked at him, watched him, assessed his impact on the team, and consigned him to the subs bench at best.

Esbjerg have had a very poor season and Schmidt has been deemed as not being required.

He strikes me as a poacher who needs extremely good chances presented to him. That's something we've not done this season largely. He'd also be up against some pretty agricultural defending. He's often struck me as someone who hides and doesn't want to get involved.

I'm not sure that's what's needed in league 1. But it may be a case nobody wants to buy him, and terms of a loan aren't sufficient to be attractive, so we instead use him as his contract runs down.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see him back with Scunthorpe - where we found him. Nothing but good memories of his time with us and if Wednesday had managed to tempt Conor to sign with him they would have got to the Premier League on the back of their fantastic partnership.

I've watched Barnsley since the late 70s and seen some very good Barnsley sides, but the second half of that season is the only time we've been head and shoulders above everything else in the division. We were the best team by a long, long way.
There's a piece of video footage in the tunnel of the two teams lining up prior to the away game in the play-offs against Walsall. The Walsall players look nervous, they're looking at the Barnsley players and you can see they're thinking 'how the hell we going to beat these?" Our lads look like giants, they're perfectly serene, they've already won the game.
I had a similar experience prior to the Wembley final against Millwall. I knew we were going to win. I didn't think we would win, I knew it. As did everyone I travelled with. There were no nerves. We were streets ahead of the opposition, we were motivated and we were ruthless and we would beat anything and everything put in front of us. Brownhill and Hourihane in central midfield in League 1 with Hammil to the left of them and Winnall and Fletcher in front. That is frightening quality to be playing at that level.

Think there is always room for giving folk a second chance, this would be quite risky, maybe too much of a risk due to his injury history recently. A fit Winnall could probably still score plenty at L1 level, but not if he is constantly looking for fitness. Only way I'd go for this would be if we missed all our transfer targets and he signed on some cleverly worded pay as you play / performance related contract. Otherwise too much of a risk and he ain't getting any younger.

I havent seen much hate on here just people giving honest opinions that mostly they wouldnt want us to sign him due to his injury sustained a few seasons back and the fact he hasnt scored many and struggled to get in the oxford team.

Exactly that. I always remember watching the footage of the Wembley game afterwards. Hourihane in the tunnel before walking out. His exppression was pure steel. Awesome.

It wouldn't be the biggest surprise in the world if Schmidt and Thomas suddenly find a spurt of form next season just as their 4 year contracts are coming to an end.

Can't see Thomas coming back. We're too far from his home, he said he was really homesick.

It would be a huge surprise to me.

Schmidt doesn't have the talent to be a professional footballer, no matter how hard he tries, and trying really hard isn't his bag either.

Thomas could maybe make it as a lower league player but he doesn't have the application. He's not going to suddenly find that desire to do it, he simply hasn't got it.

I admire the faith that you've got in them, ones not a footballer and the other can't be arsed :D

I forgot that Winnall signed for Wednesday on the day of Rimmo's funeral.

Just after he'd pointed to a black armband the previous match.

    He can get ******.
