Who would you go with in Stokes first game after Root stepped down as skipper? Here is my selection Lees Compton Root Brooks Malan Stokes Foakes C Overton Parkinson Broad Anderson Mostly based on current form and also what surely must be a return of our 2 leading test wicket takers. Please feel free to pick the bones out of it.
Sounds they will stick with Crawley and Lawrence and stop playing Malan due to his age. Josh Bohannon seems likely to play.
From media noises this is what I expect the first test team to be..... Lees Crawley Bohannon Root Lawrence Stokes Foakes Woakes Parkinson Broad Anderson Brook should be in there but fingers crossed Yorkshire don't get too ruined by call ups.
Haven’t heard anything about Archer for a while … last I recall is that he was fit enough for the IPL and then he wasn’t
Crawley has a top score of 54 in county cricket so far this season. Why not just select people who are in form.
Looking to make his comeback later this month https://www.skysports.com/cricket/n...ormats-as-he-gets-set-for-cricketing-comeback
England will want to go for a medium-term approach, Jack. From the little bit in the media they will go for Anderson/ Broad this summer when possible. They will bat Stokes 6 and Root 4. They will likely go Foakes or Bairstow at 7. Bairstow could bat 5 if not WK.
It sounds like Stokes doesn't want to be dropping people after two minutes, which has been a England problem in the past. He's going to give those they believe to have big potential the time to grow in to the roll which will hopefully pay off eventually for a long time down the line. Bairstow won't ever play test Cricket again. If he thought he had a chance he would be playing for Yorkshire to prove himself and not flopping in the IPL where his last game was his one and only fifty.
lees is a funny one, but started season well, read good things about robson at middlesex, could be worth a punt for "red-ball reset 2.0" but no matter who they pick we must to stick with that top order for the series no matter what unless injured, also root is going in at 4 so with brook an unknown entity maybe worth a punt at 3 as we're stuck on that position, or play it safe malan 3 brook 5 no doubt we'll all be slagging off the ecb losing more players, assuming brook gets a call that is ;-) also hope graham thorpe isn't as ill as reported, jeez i'm 2 weeks older than him
Cook Lees Malan Root Brook Stokes Foakes Robinson Parkinson Broad Anderson I’d beg cook to play this summer. He won’t of course so we may see a recall for Robson or Jennings. Robinson gets the nod at home, curran/woakes will be talked about too, although if someone with sheer pace is fit (archer/stone) I’d be picking none of them three.
yeah cooky won't be returning, we've also got to balance the bowling, anderson & broad need to play same games together for me, rest both or none but obviously broad will want to play in the 2nd test, they'd be the 1st 2 names on sheet all 3 tests for me but can see jimmy missing headingley
Bairstow got a century in his last Ashes Test ( 4th ) and a typical 140 in the Windies 1st Test. I know he’s had a bad time in the IPL but that’s not cricket really. He’s never turned down or hesitated to go on tour and he’s been happy to keep wicket in any format when and if required. Also, he is flexible where he bats as he’s been up and down the order. You might guess I’m a Bairstow fan but surely he’ll be in the squad.
Bairstow is brilliant but he should stick to playing in the county championship. If he was in contention to play he would be coming back early from the IPL to get some four day games under his belt. I think he's been wrote off by the ECB now at that form of the game.
