Well given what happened to Jamal Khashoggi I expect the manager will be getting an easy ride from the press core going forward. Also it’s very disappointing to hear a supposed civil rights lawyer in Kier Starner saying it’s not for him to say whether the deal should go through or not. So it’s of no concern that a consortium led by a man who ordered the murder of a journalist should be allowed to take over a football club? Okay mate, just goes to show, you can literally get away with anything if you have money.
Good article on why it’s a bit much to expect Newcastle fans to suddenly be the defenders of human rights abuses by Middle Eastern tyrants. https://www.theguardian.com/comment...ver-newcastle-united-england-football-capital
They aren’t a club having a bad spell. They’re a club with top 8 potential been deliberately mismanaged into one that just stays up whilst the owner takes the profits. The situations completely different to a Sheffield Wednesday who have always tried to compete (a little too much in recent years). It isn’t delusional to expect your owner to compete financially with clubs that have a similar revenue to yours.
I wouldn't say anyone deserves to be a new super club (I'd prefer a more equal playing field, but those days are long gone) but I think Newcastle are a club in need of a lift, a bit of cash and an upturn in fortunes after being treated with contempt for so long by Ashley. Regarding other clubs and your examples: I see Burnley as overachieving, I'm sure their fans are happy with premier league survival year-on-year and good on them. Everton look to be on the upturn with the way this season is going and Benitez at the helm, but they will always be in the shadow of their neighbour's success, so I see your point. It's just opinions. I think Newcastle deserve a bit of luck and have phenomenal support and their supporters in my opinion deserve better than what theyve had the last few years (I don't like the nature of the takeover team though, obviously). Then again, my old man still sees Newcastle fans as scumbags for smashing up the town back in the 80s, and they'll forever be on his red list for it. Opinions eh. As an aside, I bet those games in the 70s were cracking, a packed out St James's on the terraces! Or was the reality different?
Nah not for me, honestly. It's like cheating on football manager. It gets boring after a short while. When you realise the only reason you club is winning is due to money all the life is sucked out of it.
I went to some great games, like when they beat Liverpool 4-1 with "Jinky" Jimmy Smith running riot. I also saw some awful games the season they got relegated. The joke going round the town just before Christmas was "What's the difference between Newcastle and a triangle? - A triangle's got 3 points." I don't get all this about "great support" by the way, who else would you go and watch round there? It's a massive City with only one team, the nearest competition being Sunderland, 30 miles away. Contrast that with South Yorkshire, 5 league clubs within a 12 miles of where I grew up in Bolton on Dearne.
Take your point about home support and a one club city, but was thinking more about their unconditional away support. Maybe it's because geographically they are shoved in the top right corner of England so it seems like they always have further to travel? This is just a perception (of Newcastle fans) I've always had. Then again, I guess it's not that far to away games in the north, but then you have away days at Southampton, Brighton etc. and they always sell out regardless. Having said all that what is more impressive, a consistently high following on the road (regardless of the club's on-field success) or 50 Fleetwood fans travelling to Plymouth? Maybe it's a delusion.
Regardless of population & surrounding area the core supporter base is far more dedicated than most clubs. Clubs like Villa, Leeds, Sunderland, Wednesday & there’s probably others all lost a far greater percentage of their fan base when they were relegated from the top flight. The ground was nearly always 90% plus full when they were in the championship even though they hated the ownership.
So may of their fans saying they like it , one says " I need to see the sponsors name on it before I can make my mind up" How about....
beheading united. Grim, I cancelled SKY and BT yesterday, I can't pay into this circus anymore. Going to take the money I save and give to charity and find someone on gofundme who deserves it.
You say that, but this is the same fan base who were dressing up as sheikh's the day the takeover was announced. So I fully expect them to sell out of this kit. I guarantee you'll have someone with 9 Al-anshearer on the back before the start of the season.
