Been a really intriguing game this. Both teams playing well. Huddersfield playing it about like we did under Struber, Luton pressing high up the pitch like we did under Stendel. Enjoying it.
Decent game that. Thought Luton had more territory but town dangerous on the break. Its set up nicely for the 2nd leg on Monday. Now, for dem blades to take a pasting against Forest tomorrow
Not one shot on target between the two clubs in the second half. Thought the keeper should have saved the Huddersfield goal as you shouldn't be getting beaten at your near post. Huddersfield are in the driving seat now as I feel Luton needed a lead.
I’d like a Huddersfield, Forest final. Prefer it when it’s 3rd be 4th in the play off finals, when Barnsley aren’t in it anyway…
You look at those teams tonight and if either Hudds or Luton go up then they're going to have to spend a lot of money or they will be back down before the Christmas trimmings!! Dean Hoyle copped a fair amount of stick last time Huddersfield were in the PL, in particular during the second season for not spending when they were awful.
I hope Luton go up. I think it's better for the game if clubs with small budgets can achieve success.
It is hard to argue with that, but the logic of that view is that play-offs should be scrapped. On balance, I prefer keeping them, because interest is maintained until late in the season for a greater number of clubs.
I’d prefer to see two or three teams automatically promoted and then a play off between a team in the division above playing a team in the division below if we want to have a play off.
That's a good system. I believe that's how it works in the Bundesliga. By the way, I don't know if you follow the National League North, but the situation there this season certainly supports your argument. York City, who finished 5th, are at home in a single leg final to Boston United, who finished 7th. York are at home because they finished above Boston in the table. Pity poor Brackley Town, who finished, 2nd, 21 points above York and 24 points above Boston, but are out because they lost 0-1 on Saturday to York in the play-offs. This massive disparity certainly emphasises the unsatisfactory nature of the play-offs, I have to concede.
Used to happen if I remember rightly. Wasn't the Leeds v Charlton play off final between teams from different divisions.? Edit The 1987 play off final. Charlton 4th bottom div 1. Leeds 4th div.2. Charlton won btw.
It's kept interest going and York have come good at the right time but Brackley must be gutted after coming 2nd,but they all know before they start the season.
You are, of course, right that the rules are clear at the start of the season, and it certainly maintains interest for more clubs for longer, but on this particular occasion the huge gap (25 wins and 5 defeats for Brackley, as opposed to 19 wins and 14 defeats for York) does give strong support to the claim that the system is unfair. Obviously, York fans will be delighted, though I know one who still feels somewhat uncomfortable about the play-offs system. One thing which exacerbates the situation here, is that there is only one automatic spot. Brackley finished 2nd, 7 points clear even of 3rd place.
