I think we’d have scored 10+ if that pen had gone in.

Remember the challenge on Ward, where the player lunged in at him with both feet ?.
Thats what made Ash retaliate and stamp on him.
Then Martin Scott also got involved and raised his hands at Ward, until the ref came over and then he din't want to know!.

Darren Williams, involved in all 3 incidents - knocked aside by Ward for his goal, fouled Ward for the missed penalty and then went through him when Ward retaliated.

Ahh I din't know that he was involved in all of the Ward incidents.
This is also one of my favourite all time away league wins. Because of the penalties and harsh sending off, and the fact that it was a great game, and especially as we had a poor record away at Sunderland (Im sure Ive got the highlights of it somewhere lol).

And speaking of losing away to them and penalties, was it our first ever cup shoot out when we lost there in the Full Members cup in '86 ?.

Here's the Sunderland match highlights that we've been talking about from '98, and biased Tyne tees commentary from Roger Thames!.

What a horrendous shirt colour clash!

Those were the days when we had some great players.

Ward was unbelievable in that period just before we sold him.

One of my favourite away wins that. But probably not quite as enjoyable as the 2-1 wins at Bramall Lane and Elland Road that kept us up when Machin was first appointed.
