It's a lottery when the ball gets played up to Vic - he lacks consistent control for the most part, but every now and then he does something pretty decent. But not often enough. As far as last season goes, you can change the word "Vic" in the above sentence to Woodrow, Cole, or Iseka. I would replace them all, if I could.
Iseka for me showed talent. He was not helped by lack of a decent striker alongside him and became disillusioned. Should have been given more game time alongside Morris when he came back into the team.
Agree 100%. Be a waste to get rid of him now but finances will probably dictate, plus he will likely want to play at a higher level.
Cauley woodrow last season= 28 games 4 goals (1pen) Victor last season= 26 games 3 goals. Patrick schmidt= 20 games 2 goals (playing in a league so bad they have to clear cattle off the field before they play) And we allegedly paid over 1million for schmidt.
And you can guarantee when the chips are down Vic is getting both barrels, even if he did make a 5 minute cameo. Same with Oduor. People picking on Vic for his goal stats last season in a team that scored 33 goals in 46 -33! He never seems to get a decent run in the team. With a decent striker alongside him (Cauley/Morris) and in a team on the up, I do think he could really step it up.
I think he offers something diffrent wether from the bench or starting and like loko says he wont be on big wages so to replace him for another back up striker would cost the club more. If it was a choice of keeping vic over schmidt, cole, oulare i know i would keep vic.
I would definitely keep Vic over those too. A part of me thinks Schmidt could do a job in league 1, but the sensible part tells me he's just not very good. As for Cole and the absent one, I have no hope unfortunately.
The way I see it is would anyone be happy if we signed Victor on a free transfer this summer as a squad player to try to get us back up? I wouldn't be. Would anyone be happy if we signed romal Palmer on a free transfer, went online and read the comments about him being bone idle from hundreds of fans of his previous club? Again I wouldn't be.
Would you take onboard that they've both worked under the worst two coaches in our history when coming to that conclusion
Yes. Victor has played for us for FIVE years now so not one. Palmer was subbed on 60 minutes every week under val too and poor managers may be to blame for him getting so many chances, they're not to blame for his complete lack of effort. The majority of posts on here, Facebook, Twitter etc about him aren't about his lack of ability z they're all about his attitude. Offering him a new contract is nothing more than a gamble that we can make a few quid on him, it's nothing to do with the football pitch because if it were nobody would be offering him a contract after he helped us go down
Victor is a bit of an enigma to me. I’m impressed with his control of the ball, which I don’t always expect from such a big man, but he’s goal shy. I’m surprised he’s been with us for 5 years, most of which have been in the Championship. He’s got to do it this year in division 1 and it depends on who the coach turns out to be. We’ve got him so if we want him to succeed we need to get behind him.
I don’t think you know what the retained list actually is. That’s not a dig, but an observation, because it only ever played a part in the future of four players and it’s likely three of those will leave. How that influences your season ticket plans I’ve no idea.
Victor can beat a man and create a goal. His finishing isn't as bad as suggested either. However, his control is not up to the standard of either the Championship or League 1. A dozen times every game the ball is played up to him and it bounces off him to the opposition. It unbalances the entire side. It makes us vulnerable to conceding when we're in attack. The last thing a team needs is to be vulnerable to conceding when the ball is played to your centre forward but that is exactly the situation we find ourselves in when Victor is in the side. We've done our best by Victor and he's given his best for us. It wasn't an abject failure, he has some qualities, but ultimately his touch is not that of a pro level player. And that cannot be ignored even if he is fourth choice. It inevitably results in introducing a player who will increase the chances of conceding. That we've offered a player of such limited skill another contract, albeit a nice guy, is very, very depressing. We won't be signing a good player, we're going with Victor.
I think Palmer is beyond redemption in your eyes, the same with Benson. Both could be a force for us in League One. Palmer was very good for us when football resumed (QPR away onwards) and he applied himself well. He was instrumental in the Val side and was probably subbed off on the 60 minute mark as you point out due to the ultra-high intensity of Val's press, along with the fact that 3 strikers were often thrown on on 60 minutes and someone had to come off. He is also still only 23 years of age. I'm not sure exactly what Palmer has done to you, but maybe give him the benefit of the doubt? Unfair to repeatedly call him out when last season was utter gash in every aspect of the team - so many of them lacked the fight needed to stay up, and that is ultimately what relegated us. That wasn't down to Palmer and Benson coming off the bench and being utter pish, it was down to a lack of balls from the team as a whole. That, their heads dropping and feeling sorry for themselves, and the fact we had possibly the two worst head coaches in the history of the club.
Are you sure you’ve been watching Victor and not someone else by mistake ? Victor is by far the worst at ball control I’ve ever seen at the Well in a red shirt snd that’s some statement considering some of the players I’ve seen . Unless he’s running on to a ball I have zero confidence of him keeping it imo .
It’s a funny one. Sometimes he’ll control a ball he had no right controlling, and then other times a simple ball in to him will bounce 10 yards off him like his body is a 50p coin. I’m more than comfortable with him being someone who comes in to see games out if we’re winning, or is an additional striker thrown on to chase a game when we need something different. Again, I point to his likely salary and suggest that getting someone to have a similar role in the squad would cost us more at today’s pricing. If we’re planning on him getting 30+ appearances next season then I worry, but I don’t think we’ve offered him a new contract to do that.
