Just listened to the Liverpool fans singing their Anthem I Can remember the Barnsley fans singing it one foggy night in the 80s at Anfield hairs standing up on the back of the neck....and the kop actually applauding us...things changed once we got outside though..bricks bottles and the mark of zero from their favorite Stan
Not inside the ground outside all hell broke out ...kid from Lundwood had a Stanley knife down his back
Outsang the Kop that night.. Came home on the bus afterwards with the window where we were sat completely missing…..on a freezing night! Memorable journey!
It was mayhem outside! But what an experience, taking over Anfield. We had the Anfield Road End, most of the Kemlyn and half the main stand.... official figures were 17,000 Tarn fans that night.
The atmosphere was electric just a pity the dustbin man couldn't connect.....been a different tale if Dec Parker had played lol Out played them at times but definitely out sang them, before ,durring, and after the match lol.... hence they joined in the singing before stopping and applauding us.
I remember loads of folks just running around and shouting, saw no actual fighting. When I read about the Stanley knife thing in the papers the next day, it felt slightly unreal, a great night, magnificent performance from the team against arguably the best club side in the world and we out sang the Kop, then I read that. Awful.
We did not get in until the second half due to being stuck in the fog but it was a fantastic performance ,however getting back to the coach was tricky, there was plenty kicking off & I was pleased to get back on to the coach in one piece & then the next day the news about the lad getting cut up hit the tabloids , the replay had a different atmosphere with anger from the reds fans & I remember the ponty end belting out " Who"s the bast-rd with the knife " , it ended in defeat after Dusty Bin Walker scored but over the two games we were outstanding .
you are joking arent you????????/ as the mate of mine who was slashed with a stanley knife in his back which ended up with 80 stitches in!!!!!!!!!!! no, certainly no hint of trouble, neother were there any 'Liverpool' fans throwing bricks...
Anybody who didn't see any 'hint' of trouble that night were very lucky, or picked a good way back to our buses. Me and a mater got run dodged them but ended up amongst their coaches, from which we walked very carefully with mouths firmly shut! Some of the comments and statement of intent as we were walking through definitely influenced my opinion of Liverpool fans from then on.
The fog that night was like pea soup it was also cold and very eerie...not seeing any trouble did you have sun glasses on lol For those not old enough be there to look up the old film shows which show smog and very little street lighting and that will give you an idea how bad it was...getting there was an absolute nightmare ...traffic hold ups due to many accidents along the way but the lads did us proud on the pitch
Think we were on the same coach! Problem was something like 200 coaches went so it needed every one they could get. Was a fantastic night though, we played superbly. Aren’t we the only side unbeaten on their last three visits to Anfield?
Must have been lucky if you didn't see trouble. We were attacked getting on the coach at the end until 40 miners got off the coach and they ran. We were bricked all the way down Queens Drive until we got to the m62. The stabbing caused a toxic atmosphere in the return leg. Who's the b*****d with the knife was the main chant from the Ponty. It was an incredible night despite the trouble
Best atmosphere ever created by Barnsley fans. Out weighing any other game for me. Saw a few bits of trouble. We called at the first services on the way home, it became packed out with tarn . The talk amongst everyone was the trouble rather than the game. And some incidents were horrendous. The Stanley knife incident was headlines on the back page of one or two of the papers next day if I remember rightly. It smacked in the face of the supposed best fans in the world at the time. Though I reckon most of those involved didn't attend the game. As incidents were rife on the way to the ground even well after the game had kicked off. TBF those in the ground were amazed at the amount of support we took and appreciated our fans and teams performance.
A mate of mine got mugged.. then glassed after he ran into a pub for help! Seem to recall the Chron mentioning an off duty policeman being assaulted whilst he and some friends assisted a wheelchair bound fan through the snow. Then there was the "Stab a Scouse " paint job that was daubed on the walls at Oakwell prior to the replay.
I think you're seriously wrong, mate. There was no snow, it was really foggy. I drove and it took me more than five hours to get home to Woodnewton (Northamptonsire). Got home around 4:30 a.m. Had to drive through Stoke with my window down (to see the kerb) because you couldn't see the road ahead.
It was very icey if memory serves me right and I do believe it had snowed previously which most likely had frozen in places.
