Jimmy Floyd Hasslebaink and Michael Duff are among five candidates in the running to become Barnsley’s new manager……Chesterfield boss Paul Cook has not been considered, El-Ahmad confirmed.
I feel its a bit poor from BFC here and show's their inexperience. Normally any answer is no comment about a future coach until he's named. And any other names are never confirmed officially. Ether one of or both Duff and JFH, will have to return to their club with said club and fans knowing they were wanting to jump ship now. Sure some will say.. who cares, but it would not surprise me if one or both pulled out now, if only to save face.
We did apparently get permission to speak to duff. And we did everything the right way. I'm guessing it would be the same with others if they are in work already
I'm glad that Paul Cook isn't amongst the five that are under consideration, however Duff and JFH are but two... who else is on the list??
I feel like Jekyll and Hyde on here at the minute. On the one hand I'm applauding the new make up of the Board and feeling a lot more optimistic and on the other there's still things like this that don't sit right. You're spot on, the names on the shortlist should not be published. Also when Khaled was on about structuring things so that coaches leaving didn't affect the stability of the club like when Val and others left....that's exactly what they were saying four years ago and was cited as the reason for having a coach and not a manager. I have to say that, time and again, he leaves me underwhelmed. I hope I'm going to be able to change my mind on that soon.
From the Chronicle: On the managerial search in general, El Ahmad added: “There are three buckets. One is very experienced, one is up and coming with not much experience and the other is what I call a solid candidate with some seasons behind them. We want a manager who wants to come to Barnsley. It has to be the right fit.”
Very experienced. We've previously heard of past links to the club. If it's the same person it has to be Warnock or McCarthy as nobody else fits the bill.
Duff’s Missus might have final say. Married a Cheltenham Lass and kids settled in local schools and he has said he considers Cheltenham his home. If he does come it will be a difficult decision - career v family life. Good luck to him.
Money and career progression will trump kids at school. Different if they were in high school. Primary school it doesn't really matter if you switch. Kids soon make new friends and adapt to changes better than they get credit for.
I would think it a bit risky if I was a manager with young kids. Could be out of a job and have to re-locate (again) in a couple of years or less. I'd be looking for a bit of stability for their sakes in the short to medium term if it were me.
Generally though in this case - the manager wouldn’t need to bring his family up at first. There’s no need to. Stendel, Struber and Val didn’t bring their families either - and they lived a lot further than Cheltenham. It’s doable at first - and I wouldn’t question the commitment of any manager either for doing so.
I would imagine at this point in life any job Warnock takes will be either a labour of love or something he's interested in rather than a status thing. He's regularly spoken of his affection for our club and his time here.
Not only that but if Jean Cryne has been in contact with him, & built up a bit of a relationship with him then it might make it more of a personal thing for Warnock. He’s clearly got a soft spot for us due to his playing time with us, & the people associated with the club. Wishful thinking probably.
