    Fascinating read thanks.

I still find it odd as to why we decided to discard this style when it clearly worked with our young players. Very exciting to watch imho too

It was exciting at times - other games were godawful with zero football.

Which describes least season down to a tee. Along with zero points.

That's true but you get games like that choose what formation/tac-ticks are used.
Watched forest-Hudders the other day, supposedly two of the championships best teams... Awful game, Huddersfield never had a shot on target all match.

Very good article, the FA employed a technical director called Charles Reid,I think. He too had shown that the quicker you get the ball forward, the more opportunities you had. He used data from FIFA,as well. This during the period of Terry Venables stint as coach, he vehemently disagreed with him and wanted him sacked. Logically though,if you attack the opposition frequently and in numbers in their penalty area, you will score. Tie that in with strong organised defence, and you have a higher chance of winning.
The recent Champions league final was a great example of this strong defence, not seen or practised much these days.
There is a another good article on the BBC Sport website about Dr DiMcChelis and his work at AC Milan in the 90s. He developed the Mind Room, using Psychological methods,Physiotherapy and analysis, to improve and maintain the wellbeing of players.
I personally, am a big fan of using all disciplines in professional sport.

We'd been sussed. Towards the end of the season in my view. Wendy exposed us easily.

Yet more criticism for Valerien Ismael, who took over when we'd not won a single league game and got us comfortably into the Championship Play Offs. Thankfully, he left and we've gone on from strength to strength since(!) :D:D

    Great post that.

Analytics are clearly a massive part of the game now & the tech is so much better.

That said the best managers of the 70's / 80's / 90's did not take them on board. Now is a different time.

Any team that does not use sports science to some degree is living in the dark ages. That said experience & team balance need to be fitted into the equation. If you sign players just on stats & ignore the other two elements you are going to get a season like 2021-2 for Barnsley. Admittedly Conway signed players on non of these bases in the summer & signed two terrible managers to boot. Still we were lacking experience & balance.

    Please tell me I'm wrong?

That’s my school of thinking too. And the reason why he ultimately failed at WBA.

    1) Sussed out.
    2) Lack of subs.
    3) Lack of a plan B.
    4) Lack of inexperienced youth willing to listen at WBA.

If big Val could tweak his game plan more, and adjust against teams accordingly either pre or during a game, I think we would have got to the final - or conversely, I think he’d still be employed by WBA.
