Whilst Paul Conway's stint as CEO in the summer royally fecked us up, we were still in with a very real shout of staying up in January and it was that transfer window which ultimately saw us relegated.

It was clear to everyone in October, November and December that our central midfield didn't exist yet for some reason the club, which the current CEO had 99.9% autonomy over, chose to completely ignore the glaringly obvious to the point that they/he even made the decision to leave an in-form player out on loan and it was this decision that saw us relegated

I get what you’re saying but we would have been relegated regardless in my opinion.

I don’t know why you try and start these threads, but we did try to sign the midfielder you’ve described. We couldn’t attract them for a) money reasons or b) league position.

If we hadn’t have built a shocking squad in the Summer and destroyed all our budget, we might have been able to find the funds to strengthen the squad further in January. Oulare securing his move out being a huge factor.

I think it was the head coach appointment of poya that finished us off schopp was bad but a half decent head coach/ manager would have kept us up. The amount of times we went one up and tried to defend the lead to lose or draw was embarrassing even the Middlesbrough game we won we was very fortunate.

Because it's a Barnsley forum for discussing Barnsley FC.

We've had shocking summers before and when needed we've brought in players where needed to try to get us out of the hole.

It's very worrying that we couldn't afford any central midfielder

It’s like you wait for a lull on the BBS and then find a reason to discuss something that allows you to bash the club again. It’s pretty transparent. It’s also points that have been discussed in detail before, on both counts, so you’re not suggesting anything new.

Budget was severely limited because of what we wasted in the Summer and what we had to pay an acting CEO. You’re right, that’s very worrying, and I’m glad people at the club have done something about it.

Agreed but on the other hand i still think a decent manager following hecky would have kept us up but we got morais in. Least there consistent.

Ah so you can bash the summer but not the winter. Got it.

Actually it was in response to whitey saying how important it is that we get central midfield right next season. I didn't think it was right to reply in that thread because it wasn't fair on whitey to do so.

This thread isn’t really about that though is it?

Otherwise you would have said as much, discussed existing options, potential options, and how it’s the first thing the new Head Coach has to get right. Nothing in your OP relates to next season or getting midfield right. Just an attempt to call out the CEO out of absolutely nowhere, because you’ve not managed to do it for a while, with things discussed already.

The money was there to pay Quina and Bassi on January 31st.

Why wasn't it there on January 1st?

We waited till the 11th hour and it effectively relegated us.

Exactly. And we put all our eggs into the attacking basket without thinking about central midfield at all. It was bonkers and it doomed a sinking ship

We had to sell Williams and Sibbick to bring funds in.

Fair. But do it early in the window?

I never get why clubs wait till deadline day - and it's not just us either.

Because that's how the windows work Fonzie. It's a knock effect normally started by the biggest clubs. You have to wait for something to happen before you can act and bring people in.

Surely if the clubs we are selling to are going to wait then We have to as well? Of course we could push them but then they might say no or not offer as good a fee.
Unless you’ve got the available cash to get deals done early then you’re waiting for others so you have the cash to make your moves. I don’t think the CEO can do much about that unfortunately.

    Back in my box then.

Although i still don't think Williams/Sibbick fees and wages saved offsets Quina and Bassi.

    Be reyt.

    Night all.

Because on January 1st we hadn’t moved on Oulare, Williams, Sibbick and Frieser to free up the budget? Because there literally wasn’t any money left from the Summer?

The January window is also renowned for being late as other clubs wait for their own business to happen first. We’ve named midfielders we were in talks with or tried to sign. Some priced themselves out of a move, others didn’t want to come to a team near the bottom of the division.

Given how tight with funds we were going in to January, a nominal £50k for Ben Williams and his wages off the bill would probably contribute most of what it cost us to have Bassi for essentially 12 weeks.

Think we received more than that for Sibbick, so would have covered Quina for the same time.
