We sold for 2.5 million hardly a good deal was it and then we sold so late in the window we were rushing around for a replacement and paid over a million for schmidt. Kieffer could have played with his shoelaces tied together and would still have scored more than schmidt.
One of the most baffling things in my time as a Barnsley fan was how many on here were happy for him to go. A striker that could do a bit of everything. Good in the air, good with both feet, rarely injured, a high work rate & plenty of goals & assists yet many on here used to say Woodrow was better or that we’d be a better team without Moore. As Super Tyke points out we didn’t have to sell him. We chose to. Moore started playing professionally late & as a result is trying to make as much money as possible as he didn’t have the big contracts as a young kid like many players do. That’s fair enough on his part but he was contracted to us & we chose to sell him. The club obviously thought that Patrick Schmidt was an adequate replacement
The point I was making is that we didn't know at the time we sold him if the psychological impact of his serious head injury would have an adverse effect on his future performance.
Maybe a few questioned that although he scored on his 1st game back from that injury away at bristol rovers on the final day. I always thought he was good in the air but also had great feet for a big man. So to sell and replace with schmidt was a poor decision.
I reckon Stendel was as much to blame that Kieffer left. He changed the system to a 4-3-3 opting for nippy players outside a number 9. Thomas, Woodrow, Chaplin etc. At the time we also had Thiam and signed Wilkes too. I think a lot was down to style. Moore hardly kicked a ball in pre-season and was left out in favour of Miller in one of the friendlies. Question marks over his injury too. I've no complaints we sold him.
Barnsley decided to cash in on him as they thought he wouldn't recover to his former levels after his head injury.
Cardiff were in for him though at that stage. A manager obviously will prioritise those who look to be playing in the coming season.
He's done a lot better than I expected TBH. He's probably a better striker than we have at the moment. Only Morris on his day is better, but he is made of glass. The failure to replace him at the time was the issue. We only should have cashed in if we had a replacement, which we hadn't.
Think Kieffer has done better over more seasons than Morris has. Much as I like Morris, I'd sooner we'd have kept Kieffer.
