Some recompense for Barry Murphy going the other way, all of 60 years ago! Actually, Barry refers to them attempting to get into the League even when he was playing for them.
They seem to have spent nine seasons in the [old] Second Division from 1919, followed by two in the old Third Division (North) up to 1930. Gateshead were in the 4th Division when I was a lad. Remember Barnsley beating them in the FA Cup 1st round about 1960.
I think a lot of people forget that when they're annoyed at us having to sell players/not being able to pay massive wages etc. Just goes to show doesn't it
