I got the chance to DJ in Manchester Cathedral for 3 hours before John Digweed came on for the last 3. Definite highlight of my DJ career and what a flipping venue. Praise the lord. This was me and my mate smashing the roof off.
What was the set list Guide me o thou great Jehovah There is a Green Hill Far away Shine Jesus Shine .... or were you playing music that might not be normal in a house of God
I know literally nothing about dance music. I do, however, know the name Digweed. In 97 my girlfriend began house sharing in Manchester with a girl who had just acquired two kittens and she named them Sasha and Digweed. I seem to remember Sasha was a famous DJ too. I'm pretty sure I'm old enough, boring enough and have used this forum long enough to have relayed this story before. But just to say, mention of this takes me back to a better time. Sasha had kittens of her own, and amongst things like actually having a life, playing with those kittens and watching them grow was a joy. And I reckon, if someone is naming their cats after Digweed, he must be pretty special, and this must have been a big deal. Nice one.
I DJ'd there about 8 years ago, but was for a wedding. Impressive venue. In one of the roughest parts of Manchester, but security was good.
Hmm not sure its the same place mate, its smack in the centre near all the shopping centres and bars.
Who is John digweed? Every time one of you DJ lot mentions people you always say how special he is but the only time I've ever heard of him is on here. Is he famous in general or just throughout the DJ world? What makes him so good? And a completely unrelated question. If a DJ mixes a couple of songs together whilst doing a gig or a set (that is the closest to any DJ terminology that I know) what happens regarding copyright or licencing? Is it just free use? Do you pay a yearly licence? Could you technically get in trouble? Or am I thinking too much into it?
I thought it was the one in Gorton, it's Manchester Monastery I was thinking off: https://www.themonastery.co.uk
John Digweed was once voted the worlds best DJ in the early 2000s. His compilation album that he did with Sasha 27 years on is still classed as the best Dance Music Album of all time. Basically he’s legendary. He’s also a brilliant bloke and still a superstar DJ around the planet, playing all the biggest venues and best clubs. I’m lucky enough to have booked him for my own nights a few times now and I’ve played on the same line up about 5 times. Friday was particularly spectacular though. On to your secondary question, most dance music is unpublished so not covered by PRS. Most venues however do have PRS certificates etc as well just in case. However, most producers want DJs to play their music to thousands anyway as it creates streams and downloads, which then monetises their work. Being someone who makes their own music and who owns a record label I’d pay for Digweed to hammer my tracks which he has done because I’ll make far more on streams than I would on PRS.
Well done in achieving your 15 minutes or in this case 3 hours. But you know what they say "I'd rather sink mi tatties in a bucket full of p1issed off pirhana's"
