I might be picking here but genuinely don't know of it's just a case of you over simplifying it for the masses....

But if a club paid 60 million up front. With 40 over 5 years. Wouldn't that 60 show in the account straight away and amortisation cover the remainder?

Otherwise your gunna have accounts which have a massive different in actual cash in bank etc

Or is it because it's classed as an asset which is depreciating....

@nezbfc you are exactly right, balance sheet and cash are two very different things.

Using the example you have used. The balance sheet would initially show £100m cash turning in to £100m in intangible assets. The fact that the payment may be part up front part delayed would be reflected in the debtors/creditors balance.

I probably spend too much time looking at accounts.

I get your point Archey, relative to £40m for Pope, Aguerd for £34m, Zouma last season for £30m etc it's perhaps 'value for money'. Nevertheless, imo it's an illustration of the obscene amounts of money washing around in the PL.

And I hate that the gap between the PL and the EFL continues to grow and indeed is accelerating I think. The greed at the top end is astonishing and is even killing genuine competition in the PL. Excepting Leicester's extraordinary season in 2016, just four different teams have won the PL in the last 18 seasons. In comparison, in the 18 seasons prior to the PL, 7 teams won it. (I acknowledge btw that Liverpool were pretty dominant during that period, winning it 10 times.) Also in the last 18 seasons, the top 3 has been occupied by only 7 teams. Six if Leicester are excluded. You have to go back 20 seasons before another team entered the top 3 (Newcastle in 2002-03). In the same period before the PL started, a total of 18 different teams made the top 3. A competition without genuine competition becomes stale and boring and for me it is.

Perhaps I'm just getting old and yearning for a time that's gone. Love Barnsley hate football.

Think this is a brilliant signing for Newcastle and a bit of a bargain in today’s market at £15m.

Obviously the world of football is mental and he isn’t worth that, but given the going rate for players I think he offers great value. Talented player, consistent, and exactly what Newcastle need in the next stage of their ‘project’.

I’ve got more of an issue about how the £15m is being funded, and by who, than the transfer fee.

£15million for a 26 year old proven operator with nearly 150 premier league appearances? Who has already settled into the squad and system?

I’ve got to be honest, in the grand scale of things I think that’s a cracking bit of business and a sign that despite the bottomless pot of dirty oil money, they are still looking at sensible domestic signings.

I've developed a very handy technique for being able to vaguely comprehend the obscenity of transfer fees in football, which is to divide them all by 10. Matt Targett is being transferred for £1.5m, and the world record fee is £20m. It's still obscene and at least 10 times what it ought to be, but it does help me con myself.

After Targett joined Newcastle on loan in January, they steadily moved up to mid table security and had 7 or 8 clean sheets.
He’s got to have some credence for this so £15m ain’t a lot and he’s only in his mid twenties

Players player of the year at Villa season before last, and a successful loan period at Newcastle since January so they know what they’re getting. 15 million for a reliable Premier League level full back seems like reasonable business. For context, Villa paid Everton 25 million for Digne last season.
