I don't think you'd be wrong. I played for the pool team and did some shifts behind the bar.

The one discrepancy to that is Barnsley. Going in to Barnsley town center these days is a joy compared to what we've got around us. The market isn't great but at least it's functional. The new square they've built is great. The market kitchen is really good. It's enjoyable to go into Barnsley. And we've got loads of real ale pubs for a night out. It's so far ahead of places like Rotherham, Wakefield and Doncaster, and even Sheffield. So mnay towns are on their arse, but Barnsley isn't.

Don't know if it made the list but the Beehive was one of the roughest pubs I've been in.

I remember when I was a young man, going to Wakefield on many many occasions. The funny thing is, not once do I remember coming home!!

Yes rough as owt , I liked City Tavern downstairs and still occasionally go in the Black Rock . We gravitated down Westgate in the 80’s with the Redoubt , Beer Engine and Henry Boons , now days only really go in Harry’s Bar

I don't remember the Old Globe, but when I started drinking we used to go in The Jolly Sailor on Thornes Wharf, almost everyone drank Tetley Mild or mixed mild and bitter...my Uncle was a rarity...he only drank bitter.

I remember the Jolly Sailor being a regular Boxing Day haunt when I was pre-drinking age. Think I managed one visit in there when I was old enough for a beer and it was Landlord that was on. Great pub but just ended up being cut adrift as things modernised/changed

We’d start there because they’d open before the Redoubt. But then walk back to the Redoubt straight after to start it properly.

Jolly Sailor shut for a while and eventually opened as a food place but no idea what it is now.

We’d start off in the Spaniard which was other side of Ridings. Recall Buzz, Bitz, Exchange, Flares (later on) Rooftops, Casanovas and also another smaller bar same building. Name escapes me

Totally agree. Re the entertainment/food and drink sector. Once the Glassworks is more or less full re retail I reckon Barnsley will take some beating. (I certainly hope so) I can see it developing into a place where people will come from afar. Be it day trips or celebrations.
    C'mon tarn.

That would be later, it was a Tetley tied house when we went in about 1975-80, it was separate rooms and really hadn't been modernised since the 1920's..to the right as you went in was the tap room, the dart board was actually made of wood with no 25 or treble ring and all the segments were black, the landlord, Dennis, at that time used to soak the board in a tin bath to swell it, the water would then run down the wall. The main room was straight on with an angled bar to the right with separate counters for the two rooms...I think there might have been a small room at the back and the toilets were outside. The clientele were great and the pub itself was a real time capsule, about 20 years ago I happened to be nearby and called in for a pint, I was devastated to find it had been modernised and knocked into one...very sad, with hindsight it should have been preserved.
Just remembered...after a night in the Jolly we would always call in Chippy Wood's, which was at the back of the Forresters, if I remember rightly.
