I'd have him back. Played some great stuff under him in league one and clearly knows what it takes to get out of the league. I think the point about us conceding chances under him kind of valid, however, due to the quality in league one, teams often aren't very clinical. And I think his attitude was pretty much: you score 1, we'll score 2. Which I don't mind watching at all. Duff would also do for me, seems to have shown plenty of promise at Cheltenham. Warnock definitely last on the list as he doesn't meet the brief in terms of style of play or recruitment. If we are to recruit him we are completely abandoning the board's proposed strategy. And doing so makes them seem a bit useless.

I don't generally like to see fellow fans start with the name calling but I have to say this made me laugh out loud.

I’ve had a bit of time to consider it and he would be my number one choice

Not really, bigger clubs were reportedly interested in Stendel.

I'm hoping we're in a more positive place than either of those two sides. Maybe if we're going to struggle to avoid relegation then he may not be the best candidate.

Tbf, that's league 1 football. All teams miss chances

Would have loved for him to have been given the experience in defence that Struber was.

Under Stendel in Lg one, there may have been some games that we struggled a bit in, and maybe got a lucky win.
But Id say there were three times as many games as that, that we dominated and should have won more in. So all in all it was a great season under him.
And I remember liking him supping beer in the local pubs, and watching and supporting his country Germany in the WC lol.

Would I like him to come back again though, well thats another subject!.

He certainly meets the Board’s criteria:

    1. Knows the English game
    2. Plays a pressing style of football
    3. Has experienced promotion

Stendel was a fans favorite and delivered some of the best football ⚽ I have seen down at Oakwell in promotion season from League One. For that he will always be remembered. He also joined the club at a good time, that season we invested and GG as CEO brought unity with fans and the community like never before.

Now Conway and Lee are out of the frame a return might actually be possible. But I seriously question whether it would be the right move. It would give a lift section of fans, but would divide opinion.

My concerns if he did return are fans expectations, also how does he deal with set backs e.g. if players sold or injured. First time around everything went to plan in league one, then anything and everything that could go wrong in the championship did and no surprise by departure. I have been surprised, however, that next his jobs have not gone well. For that reason I would cautious about going back in for him.

I just don’t think he’s all that tactically. He was dealt a **** hand when we got promoted, however his stubbornness & refusal to adapt cost him his job & saw us on the end of a few good hammerings.
We need someone who can get the players up for it, but also someone who’s quite tactically astute.

Last time round the club kept together the squad that was relegated. When you think of the players at the time our front line for league one was quite impressive, Kieffer Moore, Cauley Woodrow, Jacob Brown, and for half a season Potts on the wing. Add in to that the defence of Pinnock and Lindsay, Davies in goal and Mowatt bossing midfield Daniel had a great squad for a promotion push.

He had the players but he also got the best out of them, as many on here have already said some of that season was some of the best football at Oakwell for many a year. No doubt after promotion he was looking to kick on.

The following season he finds the bedrock of his defence sold along with Kieffer Moore and the replacements woefully short of experience and ability. Despite his best efforts the start to the season was pretty woeful. At this point how much is the head coach to blame and how much falls on those in charge of transfer dealings? Daniel, just like Struber who followed, was desperate for experience.

I don’t think that period post promotion shows Daniel to suddenly become a bad manager, it was more that the players at his disposal were raw and needed a bit of experience to help them.

If you think he was lucky getting promotion have a look at the xg stats for the year, xg points has us in second place, a point behind Luton and 10 clear of third place.

Totally agree he wasn’t lucky at all. He did have a good squad though - much better than the one we have now (or at least the one we will have in August, but for some good signings!)

We actually finished second in a one horse race for me
Don’t get me wrong, I loved the football we played that season but I was honestly disappointed where we finished
We were unlucky to be relegated the season before and with the players we had available I was convinced we would finish as champions

To put a bit of context on the one horse race, one of the main competitors that year had player salaries 3x that of BFC.

Luton who were promoted as champions went on to maintain their championship status the following year. To suggest it was a one horse race is somewhat disingenuous, in my opinion, to the achievements of the team and the head coach and indeed the owners who gambled and kept the squad together.

Just my opinion and I’m sure other people will vehemently disagree.

I can see where you’re coming from regarding Luton but again in my opinion player for player I thought we were way in front of them
Don’t get me wrong I wouldn’t be too upset if Daniel returned but I think it would only be a ploy to to cover up failings on missing out on their main targets

Didn’t Jacob Brown come in to the side after we sold Potts in January? He played really well when getting his chance but coming down I’d have hardly said he was going to be a big league one player. Pinnock barely played in the championship for us in the previous season (for whatever reason), Davies had a poor season the season before and Mowatt was nowhere before returning to us. I think that highlights the gap between the divisions for me.

Granted, you are right with Moore and Woodrow, we had goals in the team. Be interesting to see who we can bring in this season to get the goals, could be a long slog.

I agree with you, last time the squad was strong in a competitive league one. This time I think we will have to wait and see what’s left after the summer exodus. Don’t get me wrong this needs to happen otherwise we have much bigger issues off the pitch.

That was obviously Sunderland.. who we didn't beat. Also had three games in hand on us at the death and should have really overtaken us.
But the squad we had then was way, way better than this one now

There is a lesson here about giving unproven players long term contract..
