Phil Bennett has passed away at 73. One of the best rugby players ever. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/rugby-union/59951325
In 1977 Phil Bennett's pre-game pep talk before facing England produced a memorable, anti-English quote: Look what these ******** have done to Wales. They've taken our coal, our water, our steel. They buy our homes and live in them for a fortnight every year. What have they given us? Absolutely nothing. We've been exploited, raped, controlled and punished by the English – and that's who you are playing this afternoon. a true legend -- R.I.P.
A Rugby Union genius. I remember being in awe watching him with my Dad. Opposition players found it difficult to lay a hand on him let alone tackle him.
RIP. The Lions of 1971 / 1974 are just something else, and Bennett might have been the best of the lot of them!
Sounds like the "What have the Romans ever done for us" sketch. Remember him well, great player RIP Phil.
I nearly posted the same... Bennett was a fantastic player, he took over from Barry John and should have got a lot more caps, but there were factions within Welsh rugby that led to infighting and sometimes Bennett and others fell foul of that. I would agree there were steadier, neat and tidier players around, but none had his mercurial brilliance...plodder versus genius... genius for me every time. For anyone who has never seen him play, google Gareth Edwards try, Barbarians v All Black's, Bennett starts off the move with two of the most brilliant sidesteps to beat world class players. Link here ...Bennett is number 10.
73 seems no age these days. Apparently a very nice, honest, decent man from those who knew and met him, after he stopped playing. Watching the highlights of his career was really enjoyable, I 'm a Rugby Union fan but I miss the Amateur days, the game was quicker, the players smaller, there seemed to be more skill involved.
Really sad. RIP. Not a great RU fan these days but Bennett was a joy to watch back in the day with his silky running. Fantastic player.
That is a great montage. He was the most exciting stand off I've ever seen. (He did get collared quite a few times, though that can be forgiven). Barry John was silkier and faster but more safe and thus less thrilling. These days they take 2 minutes to kick a goal. Bennett took about 2 seconds. And was just as good on bog peat grounds with hob nailed boots.
