Standalone facilities I assume? I’m not sure whether any of the shops have customer toilets, but the new Starbucks will, and whatever fast food outlet have taken half the Pizza Hut unit will have toilets too.
I thought of going in there the other week - its slightly off the route between Wood Lane/Westfield and my office. Maybe next time
Not sure if this is still the case, but all M&S food was tested in the office canteen at their HQ - I can't remember the price, but it was something like 40p for a full meal and they used the feedback to determine what products would go in the store. That was 20+ years ago though.
Seen that myself today no real surprise going inside the store you can see it’s dying a slow death I’m pretty sure it’s mainly food that keep it going. I hope they building can be put to good use and not charity based or just left dormant. O/T any more news coming out of the glassworks @Freddiel
I used to work at John Lewis after I left school and their staff canteen was all waitrose food. Very nice indeed !
All M & S food available from Ocado……brilliant website and service. Currently Many free delivery slots.
But quality food. I guess the clothing side has become a bind. Especially in mens. Only for the more elderly among us. .
A shame. I was starting to think this wouldn't be true. I feel a company doesn't know when they are on to a good thing. Moving will lose the majority of their current customer based I'd imagine.
Seems at bizarre place to put a M & S the one in town you can just pop in for a few bits Don't see many people walking down and then back up harbourgh hills with there shopping bags when there out and about when in town how are there elderly customers going to get there and back from the town centre. As other people have said always seems busy when we pop in
This is their strategy and has been ongoing since 2018. The decision isn’t necessarily based on the profitability of the store, and nor is this unique to Barnsley. M&S don’t want oversized, outdated stores selling clothes and food. Much bigger towns have already lost their M&S and some haven’t even got a food hall as a replacement. If the one in town didn’t perform well then I doubt they’d invest in a new food hall. The Peel Centre is the only retail park close enough to town to accommodate one as I suspect Stairfoot isn’t viable due to the proximity to Cortonwood. I wouldn’t be surprised if they’ve got a really good deal with the lease too - the units they’re taking have been vacant for quite some time.
Looking at the size of the units they’ve taken I’d say the store will be a fraction smaller than the one at Cortonwood. I don’t think it’s a bigger store than the one in town, but obviously will have a bigger food section as that’s all they’ll be selling.
I'm only quoting a council/m&s statement re the size. Council Facebook page M&S have confirmed that they will be staying in Barnsley, and relocating to a new, bigger store on Peel Retail Park. Read our statement from Cllr Sir Steve Houghton CBE, Leader of Barnsley Council.
