Yes I’d already seen the statement. Just commenting on what I know about the size of the unit at the Peel Centre vs the one at Cortonwood. I don’t know what sq ft the one in town is, but I’d say that store is bigger than Cortonwood so think it’s odd they’re claiming the Peel Centre will be bigger - unless they’re adding a mezzanine.
What about Alhambra (tkmax), or glass works? Whenever I go in m&s it seems busy. They must be ignoring a large part of their customers who use public transport, older end. I go to the market then m&s. Can't imagine anyone going to the peel centre by bus, or walking from town. Might be a better store but it's disappointing.
They’re leaving town centres in general so I doubt relocating to a smaller store in town was an option. There’s no units left in The Glassworks that are big enough. The one in Chesterfield is moving to the former Debenhams on the retail park. The one in Huddersfield closed leaving just the existing food hall at Waterloo - a fair distance from the town centre.
Has it been said if M&S will have a café in this store? The Meadowhall one is quite nice (not so much the Sheffield City Centre one).
Bumping this as the new Food Hall opened today. Very nice it is too. Still a shame to see the town centre store closed.
If only they hadn't messed up the car park down there with that bloody stupid coffee shop. It'll be even more chaotic on a weekend now that M&S are open.
I believe that the town centre one closed as it was part of the plans for a small park and would have been demolished as would the other shops from Boots Opticians round to the walk up to Market Street. However that was kiboshed as costs spiralled to make it unfeasible.
It was never in the plans to demolish that far up. The only building actually mentioned for demolition to create green space in those plans was the former BHS, and is one of the reasons New Look moved to the Glassworks.
