Think those in the 16-21 age bracket do give a sh**. You only have to look at people criticising the left wing education system - they can see the mess.

we're also being balloted next week for strike action, i know nobody wants to strike at all in rm, but a forced 2% pay rise thrust upon us without our say then making out they're the good guys in the media saying it's 5.5% which the 3.5% extra is linked to a t&c change when the ceo just got 3.6% along with a failure bonus of 142k to enhance his 700k+ pay plus free shares, it's like the 70/80's revisited but without the fight, cameron/johnson and co have really fecked up the nation

A bit like "lefty lawyers" when the Tories' illegal policies are called out.

Wouldn't have even thought about the education system tbh.
Parents and ( lack of) parenting have the most to answer for the current state of society IMHO

Hmmm... I am strongly in favour of unions but at times some unions do not help the reputation of the Trade Union movement in the eyes of the majority of general public.

Considering the above article, given the current desperate economic situation that many find themselves in, and that this strike will only make things worse for million, the rail union is probably the last organisation to garner sympathy.

How many on here earn close to the median wage stated ? It also, rightly or wrongly adds weight to the argument that the union action it is more playing politics than working on behalf of its members, a throwback to the 60s and 70s.

Notwithstanding the fact public service should not have been sold off to private sector, now it has , the Govt have little say and in spite of cries from Nandy etc. that the Govt should step in, the same people are those that complain, when it suits them, that they should stay out of private sector disputes.

In August/September 2020, the UK government suspended rail franchises, essentially taking them into public ownership. Though they retained the franchise operators to run things, the government took on the losses.

I've not been aware of any overturning of those suspensions, but it's possible they could have slinked in somewhere.

So given this, you really would expect the DfT to be involved directly in negotiations as it is ultimately the paymaster.

The median figure of £37,500? That's not a huge amount is it?

The rail operators have stated that the government is forbidding them from negotiating with the Trade Unions
https://inews.co.uk/news/politics/train-strike-chaos-continue-ministers-rail-firms-rmt-1693370 so @Tekkytyke assertion that the government has little say is not correct
the ones playing politics are the Tory government - they want a strike so they have an enemy to attack and set the baying mob that purports to be our media on. you can see this by the way they are attacking the Labour party over this when the strike has absolutely nothing to do with them

Median wage rates mean nothing. Is the CEO's wage and management wages included. Train drivers, quite rightly will earn more than the median, there will be a hell of a lot of people that earn around £25k, plus it's not just about wages.

But there in lies the problem for me mate. Articles like this are there to divide the working class. And the tories lap it up, whilst looking after those that are wealthy beyond means. What is so ridiculous, is that some folk are so easily led on.
But it seems most folk especially the younger ones are wisening up. As the figures indicate there is more support than not.
