Woman from NatWest Called, (now I’m actually expecting a call from them today) As she went through the security questions, it became clearer this wasn’t the issue that I thought they were calling for. I didn’t give any bank account details as such but I confirmed I had other accounts. She mentioned. 2 transactions that I knew nothing about, 1 being with EE. She then put me on hold saying she was transferring me to the fraud team. In the meantime I googled the number and a number of references came up quoting it as a scam. By this time the ‘fraud team’ came through saying they were going to give me a new account that would mirror my current account and I would keep my old account number. I hung up and called the NatWest Fraud team. They were aware of this scammer and confirmed the latest transactions on my account matched what was showing on my account and therefore no fraudulent activity has taken place. He said to block the number and confirmed they would never do anything like this. All this stemmed from a fake NHS Covid message last week, where I stupidly replied to the request for 99pence delivery charge for the testing kit. Fortunately I realised very soon after what I’d done and contacted NatWest fraud who stopped my card and sent me a new one. It just goes to show how easily and what lengths these scammers will go to.
[Big edit as I worded it badly. ] It seems they people to go out and buy gift cards if you get that far down the line. A number of good people have created youtube channels to show how how to avoid being caught, or simply to waste the scammers time. JimBrowning probably the most informative. Kitboga has a youtube channel dedicated to wasting their time. Worth a look if you want to learn more. If you get any calls like this though, and if you are in doubt, just hang up.
I got the fake covid text as well a few weeks ago. I almost fell for it but then alarm bells rang at the 99p delivery charge for a free test. What was particularly scary was it appeared to come from the same NHS number as genuine messages I get from my Doctors which was why I was a bit less cautious - Had it been a new message thread on my phone I would have been suspicious straight away
Yeah mate, almost caught off guard as I am actually expecting a call from my bank today but the security questions became prolonged and the issue I was expecting the call to be about was never mentioned.
He bores me a bit, so I have to skip through, but keeping just one person busy for four or five hours saves someone from potentially been scammed. Scammer Payback (Pierogi) also worth a watch.
I had one last week from the post office about a missed delivery for a parcel, as I was actually expecting a parcel that day I went ahead and started putting in my details for a redelivery, I stopped when they wanted my credit card details to charge me £3.20... it was delivered next day
Yeah, I use it as background noise while I'm working at the pc mainly and dip in when it gets interesting. I've watched a bit of scammer payback too
I had one ‘from Santander’ today telling me about suspicious activity on an account I don’t have with them.
I got one yesterday telling my that my Wells Fargo bank card has been blocked for online purchases after suspicious activities tells me to click on the below link to verify and reactivate my card etc As it starts Dear Customer The link is to a website starting brewerdems.org And the final clue is I have never had an account with them I am pretty confident its a scam Im not so worried about those though I guess if I had an account with them I would look a bit closer It was the covid one like the one that scammed @Tarntyke ( and a friend of mine) I could have fallen for - mostly because it appeared in the same message feed as texts from my GP fortunately I was suspicious when it wanted money on the website link I did click on and did a bit more checking and found the website though it looked like it could be an NHS one wasnt because they dont end uk.com and also they never charge for tests, if I had been distracted I could have fallen for it though
Feckin hate the B'stds. I'm usually alert. But got conned out of £330 (paid back by my bank within one working week. I checked my account and within minutes had reported it. Thing I found strange is the transaction was pending long after I reported it. A couple of days, maybe. But paid to the scammers. According to my bank.) Which leads me to the point. on any transaction why can't payments be pending and mean exactly that. For a set period. So you can cancel. I get it that some folk may abuse that. But their ought to be a process where that can't happen. Surely their are some technical wizards that could formulate summat where a recipient has comeback before payment is officially cancelled. I now mistrust every phone call I get. Unless it's from someone in my contacts. I don't answer otherwise. They'll leave a voicemail if they need me that bad. And then I'll assess it. The people they take advantage of most. are the elderly ones without their wits about them. Although it can and does happen to anyone. As for text messages and emails same rule applies. If in doubt. Ignore. Or make contact via other avenues. There are sometimes obvious clues. Proper email address for example. Scum the lot of em .
There’s an app called ShouldIAnswer that screens your calls for you and if someone has flagged the number up as a scam you can either set it to auto block it, or it will flash up while the phone is ringing.
