Agreed on both counts. I'm not particularly hopeful still, but last night's results at least show some real progress in not splitting the progressive vote.
The conservatives have a majority of just 68 seats now in parliament. Of which 40% have no confidence in him. Keep fiddling while Rome burns.
Bit in two minds tbh because yes its a massive loss for the Tories but also gives them time to sort themselves out before the next general election. Can’t see even ‘Teflon Boris’ lasting long after this.
BJ... Not so much a bloody nose but a damn good kicking!! IT is a clear indicator that Cons are in real trouble and BJ is a dead man walking (but we have said that before) He is like one of those awkward t*rds that won't flush! The only caveat is that Lib Dems, even with a massive swing suggests a protest vote that may well not be reflected in a GE. Labour only got 3.7% Wakefield was off the back of the previous Con MP being jailed and the candidate having already received a vote of no confidence from his own party committee. The fact that BoJo did not even appear nor any prominent Conservative suggest they may well have given up on it before the vote. Also with the Cost of living crisis, strike action, revelations of banker's bonuses being discussed (mostly behind closed doors) and leaked, it is the perfect storm and no incumbent Govt would expect much, but still, the swing was huge. Nevertheless, it is a signal to the Cons that BoJo may no longer be a vote winner who can override the problems with current policies and embolden the rebels. It is a pity the NC vote did not happen after the BEs. The outcome might well have been different. Then again, who on Earth would they choose (different clown same circus springs to mind)
A good result but it still amazes me that 30% of the people in Wakefield who bothered to vote did so for the Tories. These people walk among us. People who still believe, after everything that has happened in the last 12 years, that the Tories and even more amazingly Boris Johnson are the best option. Absolutely terrifying.
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/ar...ty-wiped-TWO-elections.html#comments-10948677 Boris is getting a pasting on the Daily Mail top rated comments. Not a good sign for him if he can't even get support there.
Watched Question Time last night and the very obvious difference in intelligence levels between the rest and the Tory supporters was insane. I would guess a very low number of that 30% could intelligently articulate their position. The saddest part of it all is that 30% of the country is a huge proportion and these are often the people who the Tories have kept down and haven't invested in. Would love to see a leveling up of education levels and opportunity amongst this group which in turn pushes the Tories back towards the centre where a more reasonable debate can be had on their merits.
don't know the exact figures but I'd guess its all the old retired folk who own their own homes in places like Ossett and Horbury who make up the rump of the core Tory vote, people who would never vote any other way - and they're most likely to get out and vote compared to younger people who hate the government but have no faith in the democratic process. Labour concentrated on these kind of areas to win over people who are more likely to get out and vote, sad but true that you're wasting your time on the big council estates, too much apathy .
Astonishing result in Tiverton & Honiton. Not just overturning a 24,000 majority, but then the LibDems registering a 6,000 majority. It wasn't even close. But of course, the convict says he's listening, but then completely ignores the message. The tory chair resigns and the convict and his sycophants twist on a pinhead to misrepresent the words and suggest he's resigned because he was responsible for the by election defeats. Then we get the evil Patel and the clueless Scully brazenly lying about the reasons and almost taking a page out of the Trump approach, suggesting the reason for the defeats are postal votes which would have been cast during the vote of no confidence that was whipped up by the media. We've had trying to present bad news in the best light possible for a long time. Then spin took it a step further. But this is just blatant lying that very few people even believe. And those who do believe it, well, you really have to question their values, integrity and morality.
