Morning JT,hope things are going well for you for you today. It's still a bit early to get a demographic of how and why people voted. Surprised by the size of the vote swing to Labour and that the conservative vote held up so well. Despite there being many candidates, it turned into a 2 candidates contest.
Wakefield as a district is quite unique, it is now geographically enormous from what it was 40 years ago ,having subsumed into its boundaries, neighbouring towns, wrongly and unfairly in my opinion. People in Barnsley and beyond, would be surprised to hear that Wakefield is a more deprived area than Barnsley.
In Health and social care provision terms I think it is impossible to rectify the problems of provision they have now. Having closed hospitals and A&E departments, health centres and centralised it all at Pinderfields. In local government management, I think they could return to something like the past. With the return of Pontefract, Castleford, South Elmsall,Osset, councils having responsibility for their districts again.
On a personal note, the hospitals I worked in, have been demolished and some of the community health centres gone too.
On the topic of the voting patterns of the Asian origin population, Muslim voters in England, tend to vote historically for the Labour party. People who are Hindu, originating from India tend to identify with the conservative party. You will have seen changes to this pattern over the past decades,in elections where George Galloway has been involved. He goes to who he believes the leaders of the community are, seduces them with promises and gets the leaders to recommend him or his candidate. A terrible man who damages families and communities with his behaviour.
Initial feedback was that it was the White, working class vote, which continued for the conservatives. They react better to the personality of the prime minister and at the moment are not feeling the effects of the cost of living changes. Also, government policies are still popular, immigration, EU,.
The difficulty for any government, is when the popularity of single issue policies , are overridden by day to day reality. We are not there yet, the prime minister is still popular with a large grouping of the population. There is no one to replace him who can achieve the broad electoral vote, which brought success in our First past the post system. At the moment, Labour led by Keir Starmer, are not making inroads into this lead, either by policies or personality.
So,the prime minister stays, people plot, lots of brouhaha, nothing changes for the time being. Event's can suddenly bring about changes, I just don't see it at the moment, sadly, because all sections of society are struggling.
All the best to you as always JT

I think you'll find that it was more down to Brexit. People voted Tory to leave the EU. Now that's been done they're quite happy to return to voting Labour. People tactically vote these days. It's no surprise really.

Galloway is nothing but a slug. Always has been. I grew up with him in Lochee and he was always a loner. The boy with no real pals. Always a strange one. So never really changed in any way.

Boris stay exactly where you are don't listen to anyone that says your no doing a great job and I'm certain you will lead the conservatives to resounding DEFEAT in next general election, short term pain for long term gain.

That makes more sense. I couldn't even begin to understand how that horrific party could get 30% of the vote, for so many reasons, all magnified by the actions of the MP they last voted in.

But I do understand why many Asian people living in some of the poorest areas of the UK would vote for someone they could reasonably believe has personal experience of some of the issues they face. I'd argue they made the wrong choice but I can understand it.

Not good for Labour in Wakey. Low turn out , only pulled back 8.1% while the cons lost 17%. The number of votes cast for labour was the lowest since 1931.
