Sorry...on a bit of a rant.... It would be funny if not for the serious environmental questions it raises.

An article on the BBC news website about the shortages of staff causing Air freight and baggage delays highlights IMO the insanity of global consumerism,,,,

It referenced the destruction of the Antonov An.225 the largest cargo plane in the World At Hostomel airport in Ukraine by the Russians.

Air freight is expensive both financially and environmentally but is increasingly being used foe. items deemed essential.

Now I don't know about you, but my view of "essential" differs from that of the captains of big business and commerce, hence my reference to the 'insane'. The following lists some of the items transported 'urgently' prior to its destruction. It adds fuel to the fire stoked by environmentalists and campaigners (albeit I do not support extremists' actions that actually causes major disruption to people in spite of the validity of their argument. The example below shows the benefits of air freight but the last example shows the utter stupidity consumer demand driven Global economy.

Ladies and Gentlemen et al ........I give you "plastic Christmas trees!? " I mean WTF?

Among the last uses of the Antonov , Quote".... transporting personal protective equipment (PPE) and antigen tests during the pandemic - but also plastic Christmas trees, the group director of cargo at Air Charter Service explains.

In the run-up to Christmas shopping season in 2021, the Antonov An-225 Mirya made four flights from China to Ireland, conveying 130 tons of plastic Christmas trees on each trip. At the time, High Street retailers were under huge pressure to get products in to stores.

All of us, and particularly the young generation who are quick to blame the boomers for half of what is wrong in the World, need to take a step back and consider what they are adding to the crisis.

    Rant over!

Why young people in particular? How does that follow from a plane carrying plastic Christmas trees?

We would have got away with years and years of rampant consumerism if it wasn't for those pesky kids!

So that is all you got from the OP and focused on? Seriously?
Implying the post was all about heaping blame on the current generation is wrong. But so is the holier than thou attitude of many of this generation and some on here who hold the past generations as entirely responsible when they are equally to blame for a continuation of rampant consumerism.

I'm all for a environmentally focused worldwide planned economy too - more than happy to work with the older generations on that.

I meant and should have said the current generation in charge rather than young people. Nevertheless see my post above in response to Jay and Barnsley Chopin

129 billion stupid useless disposable facemasks used every month during the height of the insanity. Every other environmental harm we have visited on the Earth I the last couple of years pales into insignificance in comparison.

I wouldn't say that it's fair to place the same blame on a generation who have only ever known a consumerist society and regard it as the norm as the generation(s) who let it get that way in the first place. Especially as power and influence is generally concentrated in the more senior sections of society and not the youth.
