I am hoping you can help me. Me and a mate are wanting to meet up in the Peak District for a couple of days walking followed by evenings in a nice pub. Any recommendations of decent places to stay that also involve good pubs and access to good walks? Any help would be appreciated.

Castleton or Edale would both be a good start, but they'll both be heaving at weekends. Edale is accessible by train from Sheffield. Another option, a bit further south and more "pastoral" countryside, would be Bakewell, but once again it will be packed at weekends. The Fox House Inn (near Sheffield, not the Holmfirth one), if they have room, has superb walks all around it, including the magnificent Stanage Edge, a Peak District highlight.

This might sound daft but have you thought of staying in Barnsley? The Langsett moors offer superb walking and can be reached in 20 minutes by car or 45 minutes on the bus. Just a thought, I've done that many times.

I have stayed at the Manifold Inn a few times at a place called Hulme End (once with the missus and with mates) its very nice and well priced. They have a small cottage on site you can hire with two bedrooms which is cosy but lovely, or just double rooms etc.

Pub is really nice, in a really remote area and a few nice walks you can do from the pub itself or you can drive out to nearby places for other good walks. Next village is a mile or so down road and has a few other pubs and shops etc.

Not the most going on in the area where the pub is as it is a quiet area, but really nice and not super costly. Near to some good villages you could drive to for walks like Ilam etc.

We stayed near Buxton last autumn. 30min walk into lovely town. Nice surrounding countryside and walking.
We stayed in campervan but looked to be plenty of places to stay in the town.

I think Hathersage is the nicest of the Peak towns. Good restaurants, decent pubs and feels a step up from the honey pots of Castleford et al. Great walks too. Spoilt for choice. Scotsman's Pack does rooms.

Stayed here for this exact purpose with friends walking. Also the Little John Hotel pub isn't as nice but the accommodation is good and reasonably priced.

Bus or train to Hope, head up Lose Hill and do the ridge walk to Mam Tor, drop back down Cavedale then beers in Castleton. You can then walk the couple of miles back to Hope or just get the bus back to Hathersage.

Start the walk with a breakfast from the amazing Outside walking shop cafe on Hathersage main street.

Been there this weekend. Stayed at a campsite at Hope. Laneside caravan park. Nice clean and decent value. Couple of pubs in Hope, and a short walk to Castleton. Walks all around the peaks including Mam tor are on the doorstep, also can walk into Edale. Brilliant. Although it was glorious sunshine and then a burst of torrential hail.

My parents live in Ashbourne and it’s a lovely place. Not that far from most places previously mentioned, Castletown, Bakewell, Matlock, Buxton etc etc

Lathkil Hotel at Over Haddon is one of the nicest pubs in the peak. South facing, with beer garden over looking lathkil valley. Plenty of river side walking from the pub, recommend river bradford. Its only a few miles out of Bakewell. Used to be nice home made food too. Beer drinkers tell me the beer is ok. They have rooms which look ok, but like anyway these days they won’t be cheap...

Hathersage is good - lots of walks with pubs on the routes. Five pubs there and the George has just been done out. Also Bank House wine bar/restaurant, two curry houses and four cafes. Castleton also good for pubs. Baslow and other villages around Chatsworth also all have nice pubs/restaurants. Thornbridge have opened a new taproom at their brewery in Bakewell this year.
