I cheered on Nicola, Queen of Scots in her statement today. I like the protest vote against Scotland being taken out of the EU despite, as a country voting to remain. I like that a country with a modern, more sensible Parliament with electronic voting and more transparent systems should gain more control over it's own affairs. And I like that Johnson should get what his woeful machinations deserve and that he should go down as the Prime Minister that wrecked the Union. But given that "The Union of the Kingdoms of Scotland and England" is quite clearly mentioned as one of the 'reserved matters' in Schedule 5 of the Scotland Act 1998, I think it will take the Supreme Court all of five minutes to decide that Nicola can't hold her consultative referendum. Her fallback position of fighting the next general election on this single issue will have to come into play, it seems to me.
I honestly think the establishment will close ranks and Johnson and his team of fascists will ignore all democracy and prove once and for all we live in a dictatorship.
I think they should have the right to have another referendum. I think things have changed significantly since the last one given Brexit. However, I don't think it would be a good move for them if they did break away, as much as I would be envious of them seeing the back of the Tories for good.
I think Scotland should have taken their exit when they had the chance before. It’s difficult now given it was sold as once in a generation event by Sturgeon amongst others to argue 6 years later for a rerun.
We were promised if EU membership was to be guaranteed then a no vote would be required. We were stabbed in the back. Also once in a lifetime is a myth. No one said it. But the unionist like to churn out the same old lies. Gonna be one hell of a lot of lies put out for the next year.
It's hard to see why they would vote leave. If they consider brexit not to be a benefit how leaving the union would be just based on the trading balance between the rest of the UK vs the EU. The SNP would be doing everything they have been critical about the brexit deal, this time up in Scotland. Forcing border checks etc, freedom of movement.. They even talk about keeping the pound which would not be their decision which is a massive negative should they have to create their own currency at maybe 1/3rd of the value.. Another big factor is the world moving away from one of their biggest exports in petroleum.. It would be a very bold move to leave. They should have the right to call a referendum and self determination though regardless of whether people think about leaving. It's up to the people of Scotland to decide. I'd prefer if they didn't leave, offer up independence in all but name if required, taxation, spending - the lot but remain as part of the UK.. (albeit that would not include re-joining the EU unless the UK as whole did). I think brexit is just a lever the SNP are using though for independence, they'd be calling for another referendum regardless because of the number of seats held. So how about an independent Yorkshire?
I thought it was suppose to be a once in a lifetime vote just eight years ago. I hope they get another vote though as I see it as win win.
According to full fact both Salmond and Sturgeon did make exactly those comments. However it does go on to mention about the context of when and what is said after that.
Are you sure SB? I’m not so sure but anyway Salmond is quite irrelevant these days and the throw away comment should not carry any weight. There will be a huge amount of garbage spouted from the unionist side. Unfortunately they have the master of a liar in their ranks.
I don’t want the Scots to leave , I think it’ll be a blow to Socialists in England as they are a large force in Britain . However they would thrive miles better as a nation without the Shackles of Greedy , me first country second Tories , For twelve years we’ve been governed without direction or ideas with the repercussions from Austerity now showing it’s affects . I know which way I’d be voting if I were in Scotland and a chance to throw the shackles of future Tory exploitation .
If a vote was taken and it was a yes to leaving, then what would happen to the armed forces? The emergency services are all independent as such in Wales & Scotland I think. But the armed forces would be a bit of an issue.
So taken out of context? TBH mate even I will soon be getting pig sick of everything that will be churned out in the next year. Won’t make the slightest difference of how I will vote but I still believe the dictator Johnson will win the day and nothing will happen. Maybe the Irish could change things if they get upset.
Don't get this "Scotland didn't vote for Brexit" argument. Neither did half the UK, neither did London. It was a UK vote so its irrelevant whether certain regions voted No.
Ok I bow to your evidence of it being said. But lots of politicians thought out the years have said things then went back on their statements. But what is not in dispute is the the Cameron govt said at the time a vote for independence would mean leaving the EU. Only by voting to remain would guarantee continued membership of the EU.
Good luck to them. They shouldn’t leave imo as people are stronger together (just like the EU) but why not have a go. i was massively against them leaving 8 years ago but who in there right mind would want to stay joined together with shít show of a country. crack on Scotland
It will happen one day. Can I put in a suggestion that if the Scottish Government have debt raising powers rather than debt they issue being referred to as Gilts they are named Kilts.
Hopefully they will go this time. Bored of hearing about it. Maybe they will even take some of our barmy lefties with them. The UK government should prepare to impose a hard border and review if any jobs can be moved south.
