With McCarthys arrival since @Tyke1s useful post a few weeks ago and Hondermark stating he’s focusing on the RWB role, I thought I’d post an updated squad list based on Duffs preferred 3-5-2 formation: Where do you think we need to strengthen? Who do we need to sell? Gk - Collins Walton Searle Rb - Brittain Williams Hondermark Cb - Andersen McCarthy Sraha Cb - Helik Kitching Cb - Cundy Moon Lb - Odour Kalinauskas Winfield Cm - Benson Kane Ackroyd Cm - Connell Wolfe Helliwell Cm - Styles Thomas Cf - Morris Iseka Marsh Cf - Cole Aitchinson Bremang New signings in bold Players mentioned in the press most likely to gain interest/leave are underlined U23/Fringe players in italic, I’ve included Searle in that for now as I can’t tell if he’s first team or an u23
As a bare minimum we are desperate for a LWB/LB. I know Oduor is playing there now but I just don't think he is ideally suited to that role, he is too lightweight and not good enough defensively. I know Connell has played there in the past during his career but again it is not his natural position so best to have someone proper there. I would also like one more CM to come in, ideally someone similar to Wolfe who has a little more focus on breaking up play etc. as all the others in the side are better in terms of attacking rather than the defensive side. Would also be good to get another striker in if there was the budget there to do so. Personally I would go for something different to what we have now so possibly a big mobile target man type like Kieffer was for us, that would be nice and would give us that different option if needed. In terms of outgoings, the club has said that we will only sell if the right bids come, I would like and hope that we can just get away with losing just Styles and Helik and then retain the rest. Might not be likely but that would be the ideal situation. If we had to lose anyone else, I would pick Collins as I feel keepers tend to be a bit easier to replace.
I think you’ve hit the nail on the head there Nathan. I’d like to see an experienced CM come in to be that older head in the middle. Main thing is LWB for me.
I'd lump all the midfielders together. He'll pick three from the whole bunch. I honestly think he'll go with both Benson and Kane plus one other.
Too many bodies and a lack of quality. I'm hoping the impact of a half decent coach will help alleviate the latter.
Thanks for that. It's getting closer to the time when football starts to become part of my life again and this has piqued my interest. Fingers crossed we can hold on to Morris. He's the only one I'd really miss.
I agree. LWB first, and a defensive CM second, experienced would be a bonus. Cf if there’s budget. The trouble with our current strikers is we don’t know how Cole and Iseka will perform, they could, along with Morris get 40+ goals between them, which is what we’ll need if promotion is the aim, but they could also get 15 between them if we do sign a new stricker, which would be a safer bet than risking it with Cole and Iseka, then one of these two needs moving on.
starting eleven... an opinion... .....................................Collins .................McCarthey.....Mads......Cundy Brittain.....Kane......Connel......Wolfe........Williams .........................Morris..............Iseka.... Helik and Styles would start if staying....
Connell is a defensive midfielder, so I wouldn't expect us to sign another, especially with us having Moon who can play that role too.
That looks a pretty decent L1 team TBH. Would rather have Williams as left CB & have someone who could push on more at LWB. We'll see.
Ah, my bad. I’d still like another in midfield, playing 3 central midfielders I’m presuming in most games only 1 of those will be a DM, which as you say we have cover for, that leaves us with Kane, Benson and Thomas for the creative roles, if Styles gos there’s question marks over whether all 3 of these will do a decent job. One more CM would do us the world of good. I say experience because it’s what we cried out for last year, at this level we might not need it as much, but after last season I’d certainly feel better if we had a calmer head, who organises us, somewhere in the middle.
When I look at the opening post and take out Collins, Morris and Helik, I can't help seeing a bottom six group, maybe lower mid-table if Collins and Morris stay.
Weak as anything. Once Morris goes we literally have no source of goals whatsoever. Need about 4 forwards/offensive midfielders.
