Been watching the women’s Euros and enjoying it, but it reminds me how little I know about women’s football in Barnsley. Have we got a team? What league are they in? Are they part of the Oakwell set up? Are they any good? Sorry for my ignorance, before anybody starts.
We have Barnsley Women's FC (Formerly known as Barnsley Ladies FC), who play on the Oakwell academy pitch. They play in the National League Division 1 North, which is the 4th tier on the pyramid. They were actually top of that division in 19/20 when the season was curtailed due to Covid-19, however promotion was scrapped due to the season being incomplete. There's also Barnsley Ladies FC. They're a newer team, but are run in partnership with Barnsley FC, and share the coat of arms badge. They're in the regional North East Southern Division (6th tier), although their site doesn't appear to have been updated during last season.
Sorry @Archey but not quite right. Barnsley FC Ladies are like you say run in partnership with BFC and play at Oakwell under the BFC badge. Their senior team competes in the North East Regional League and finished 4th in the Southern (!) section last season. They do indeed have a website - Welcome to the official website of Barnsley FC Ladies | Barnsley, South Yorkshire although it's very new site. Barnsley FC Ladies will be playing at Oakwell on Open Day on 16th July at 13:30 - go and watch them! Barnsley Women's FC were formed following a split from this team a few years ago. They have no formal association with the BFC and are currently based at Wombwell, and as you say are further up the Women's football pyramid, having carried the registration of the first team at the time. Both teams have junior age groups from 8+ and are providing opportunities to an absolute explosion of kids taking up the game. The junior leagues have been growing by around 50% per year for the last few years, and I expect the Euros this season will see another jump in these numbers. There are several other clubs in Barnsley and surrounding areas that compete in the Sheffield & Hallamshire Women and Girls League - women's football in Barnsley is very much alive and well!
Was this the team that played Spurs away in the FA Cup about three years ago? Lost 5-0. I went to it as was down in London and played at Barnet’s ground.
Not certain mate, but if it were around 3 years ago they'd likely have been the same team. The first season for the new Barnsley FC Ladies Open Age team was 2020-21, when they won the Sheffield & Hallamshire Women and Girls League and gained promotion to the league they're currently in.
It would also be pretty remiss in this thread not to point out that one of the England Women's squad for Euro 2022 is one of our own, Beth England
My apologies, I got most of my research from Wikipedia. The full extent of my knowledge didn't stretch past there being 2 Barnsley teams.
I've had a fiver on Beth being top scorer at the Euro's, on the strength of her being one of our own! 33/1 although she didn't feature in the first game.
I'm really enjoying the no nonsense enjoyment from the players, no histrionics, no chelpin at the ref, very few time wasting antics and a spirit of fair play all round. The technical ability of the players is superb and it's a joy to see. These women are setting a great standard for the sport and I'm sure it will go from strength to strength.
Totally agree, I'm a volunteer at the New York stadium for the three group matches and a quarter final, there's a really great atmosphere around Rotherham.
The Holland v Sweden game was one of the most enjoyable games of football I have seen for ages. High level of technical ability, application, movement of the forwards off the ball was top notch. Either of these two will take some beating.
