BBC News - Brian Glover: Blue plaque campaign to commemorate Barnsley actor https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-south-yorkshire-62165162 Well deserved.
Life is strange sometimes, I was just talking about him to my daughter earlier today (he was supposed to be presenting the certificates at my graduation ceremony from the University of Sheffield but died shortly before). Really glad he's getting a plaque, shame it can't be somewhere more prominent like The Civic building or maybe even near the Kes statue.
Did you graduate in 1997, I’m sure he was supposed to have been presenting our/ my degree award at Sheffield Uny, but heard he’d sadly died. Barnsley we’re away to Everton that day in the Premier League
I once did a recording for an advert with Brian Glover. He sat in the studio on the other side of the glass and started reading script. I pressed the button to talk to him. “I went to the same school as you did Brian.” He looked up and just stared at me. “Did tha?” he asked. “Yes,” I replied "WELL SING SCHOOL SONG THEN!" he shouted. I stood up and sung the first lines of the Holgate song. “Alreight, altreigh, tha did then” he laughed. Nobody else had a clue what was going on.
I did. Seem to remember we got beat at Everton but Barnard scored a cracker. Seems like a lifetime ago.
My old mate from school is writing and performing a song for the unveiling. Same lad who wrote and performed 'Little Blinder' for the Billy Casper statue.
I deserve a plaque on the wall outside Chennells more than Brian Glover. On account of the time and money I've spent in there. Plus that was where a cheeky young nurse plopped herself onto my knee, about 30 years ago. She's still around now in the house somewhere. Probably clutching a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc.
I believe he used to live in a bungalow towards the end of Honeywell Street. For some reason, he played a Cockney in "Porridge" and had a very dodgy Cockney accent!
Yes quite right, we used to play in allotments opposite the flats, we used to talk to him and Seth Armstrong quite often up and ararnd notton wood, and on willow bank, back in the day, memories they all cum back wi a reminder.
There's an email address at the end of this article for the guy who is organising it. ronste121@aol.com. https://www.pressreader.com/uk/barnsley-chronicle-9ZZ3/20220429/282222309324545
Stewart Barrowclough grew up in the Honeywell area. When he was a very young lad, he used to come up to Mottram Street and join in our football games in the field that was there before the YEB building was built.
My Dad used to wrestle professionally & Brian was his training partner & agent in the 60's. This was pre Kes. He lived down in Honeywell, until moving to London in the 80's. Absolute legend.
On Last of the Summer Wine at the moment. Would never surpass his 'slightly balding Bobby Charlton' in Kes.
