I think it's timely you post that transfer fees are generally paid over the lifetime of a contract. Any profit on sale (difference between the fee received and residual value, i.e how much of his purchase cost is still to be written off) will show as a one off item in the P&L. And likewise, losses on sale/disposal will too. What we need to get to is our wage bill being affordable. So less than our revenue, and in time, reduced further to comply with SCMP (60% ish with a few caveats and exemptions?). A deficit is our difference in cost v income, the losses we accumulate during a season. A debt is money owed out. Aside from the EFL loan, I'm not aware of any other creditors. The question would arise if our cash runs out while subsidising continued operational losses if we fail to reduce our costs sufficiently.
28 players, one of whom is out on loan, according to the club's website: https://www.barnsleyfc.co.uk/teams/first-team/. That is before the likely / reported sales of Styles, Helik, Brittain and maybe even Thomas. I would also expect the club to find some loan moves for some of the younger fringe players. It's not valid to inflate the number of players in the squad by naming u23s players.
Seems many fans have fell out of love with Brittain. He was a highlight season prior and very poor last season. I’m not sure which is the real Brittain but I do know if it’s anywhere near to his first season then we lose a lot from the team. I think the LB / RB Positions have been one of our weak areas last few seasons and will make a solid difference if we can have two shelled starters. Anderson looks poor without that left side defensive cover and we haven’t created two much down the flanks last season. As usual I’m more interested to see who we bring in than who goes out. I’m ok with a complete rebuild. The worry is will we start well as we often are still building into the season start. Of course there may be reasons al la Styles, Helik etc. Right now I feel we are still 3-4 players off a competitive squad considering expected and existing departures.
I wouldn't go that far! I think there is a lot of confusion between profit/loss/deficit, cash and debt.
I don’t think we’ll replace him with a RWB, Hondermark has said in an interview recently he was focusing his training for the RWB role, with him, Williams and Helliwell we are already flush in that position. agree with the comments about Williams being a better right sided CB, but we already have 6 other CBS on the books excluding Helik. with money being tight and our wages over budget I can’t see using replacing that position. CM on the other hand needs a player anyway and with Hondermark more likely to be needed for RWB, we are short here. wether we spend money on a replacement really depends on how close Styles and Helik are to going. If no one has made an acceptable offer for them yet then I can’t see us spending anything. I would hope selling those two would cover the remainder of the deficit, so any further sales such as this one would result in us spending it all on improving the squad, but until they sell we are vulnerable. If no one buys either of those before the end of the window we risk going under or if someone bids below their value before the window shuts we risk having to accept a lower offer. I’d rather keep the money from this one for now and hold out for acceptable fees for Styles and Helik, which is what I think they’ll do.
They are all available to play for the first team. and frankly, should be making the step up with league 1 being a prime time to do so. If we sell lots more of out players, especially for a very good fee, I've no issue with bringing in a player or too. But at this stage, I don't think we're anywhere near the level of whats required to get on an even footing. If we have to occasionally play 19-21 year olds, then so be it.
100% this. There's always layers to a squad and you can't just blindly remove those layers or insist that players step up when they're potentially not ready, but could be in another 12-18 months. It feels like we look at those U23 players in a very different way to we would have done 20 years ago, maybe due to greater media coverage and access to the squad as a whole. We have to have four goalkeepers on the books, and one of them will likely step to the bench if anyone is injured, but they're not really first team players and they're not having a negative affect on the wage bill. I've be surprised if Sraha and Ariely start any games outside of the Papa John's Trophy.
I have seen nothing at all from Hondermarck to come to the conclusion that he can do a good job for us in any position. He has played so few minutes for us that it's impossible to have any real confidence that he can. Brittain, on the other hand, is clearly a quality player with excellent dribbling skills and, now that we seem to have a very good head coach, who could get the best out of him, I expect him to have an excellent season for us, if, as I hope, he stays.
To be honest, Sraha in particular might be better served with a loan out to get regular first team games. Probably say the same for Moon, but Duff might see something in him. I reckon we'll see more players leaving the club, either permanently or on loan, but still see one or two players coming in. My only hope is, that Duff gets to input on what positions to prioritise given the limited budget. Personally, I'd be happy to see an academy player step up to replace Brittain, but would like to see an experienced midfielder come in.
Agreed, unrecognisable from last year to the year before - but that goes for quite a few of them. I think its hard for many to get over how bad some players were last season - despite the terrible coaching.
I very much agree on midfield. It feels very light and placing a lot of emphasis largely on a bunch who sank last year just doesn't feel right. If any further additions come in, it should be there. Once we've got our costs under control.
I think so as well. Another 3/4 to depart and then development loans on top once we make a couple more signings. I don't know if we have an academy player ready to step up and replace Brittain, so I'm happy to let those who know the players decide. I think Winfield is a great understudy to Cadden for the season, which will be good for his development, but I'm not sure we have the same player for the opposite wing. Based on the signing of Norwood I think Duff's influence is already starting to show.
I really rate Brittain and would be sorry to see him go. I think he’s one of our true quality players left. The stick he’s been getting is mad - he’s put the effort in and been a good player for us. He was poor last season but the club/ management was such a mess that nobody looked good. But we’ve got Jordan Williams - if he can stay fit I’d back him to do really well at RWB. If losing Brittain means we can keep Styles that’ll be great. I suspect Styles and Helik will still go though… Fire sale is on!
It looks like his agent thought he could get him a better move. He was linked with West Brom, Middlesbrough, etc and turned down a new deal at Blackburn. Assume none of the bigger clubs came calling now that he's ended up at Wigan.
Here we go again, selling our best players. Some fans **** a hoop with inflated quoted transfer fees, as if its going into their bank accounts. Ideas of wholly inadequate players already at the club stepping up to cover their role. We hardly ever replace decent players with hit the ground running replacements and certainly hardly ever reinvest the whole amount. Also hear the phrase ' if he wants to leave, f**k him" a lot. But why do they want to leave, why dont we create an environment where players dont always want to leave. The 2 terrible managers and the rank amatuer transfer business we carried out last season was enough for anybody to want to leave. But dont worry, our abject performance last season can be now used as an excuse to sell any remaining talent we have and the fans will lap it up and forgive.... oh and a half arsed open day and a quick photo op with Khaled in the car park and that will sweeten the deal further..#myclub. They did manage to get a good manager this time, ill give them that... but you may want to question a good managers ambition when he comes to a club who are selling their best players and not adequatley replacing them, surely cant have been included in the negotiations. Were taking lg1 for granted and its gonna end up biting us on the backside.
