A big thank you to the lady in the box office who went the extra mile for us this morning. I took my seven year old grandson to collect his first ever season ticket and, despite the ground being locked, she went to the trouble of digging out the keys and taking him to see where he will be sitting this season. He got to try his seat for size and was well chuffed. Little things that make a big difference.
Nice of her to do that but it’s not a new thing. Back in 1966, inspired by the World Cup win maybe, I went down to buy my first ever season ticket. A junior one cost £3 in the centre stand. The club Secretary took me up there to choose my seat and I opted for one right next to the Director’s Box. What a time to choose a season ticket though! We almost went to the wall that winter with Fourth Division crowds below 2,000 but, as many will recall, we had Geoff Buckle and Ernest Dennis waiting to invest £10,000 and the club was saved. That modest investment got us two goal scorers - Barrie Thomas and John Evans.
Footnote : Thomas & Evans in my opinion were one of the best striker pairings I have enjoyed watching in a reds shirt , I know it was the bottom division & I know we have had better quality pairings since that era but those two turned our fortunes around & together at that level they were a handful .
They were, to quote the modern definition, “different class”. The transition from no-hopers to an exciting team on the up came very quickly. That FA Cup First Round tie against Southport, top of the league at the time, was amazing. 11,000 in the ground and a pulsating 3-1 win! All on the back of getting two proper strikers in. Mr Duff - take note!
The box office and the community reds are our Crown Jewels . My lads have been to the summer camp this week . 12 quid each for 6 hours ! The coaches are all are a superb
It's the little things isn't it. People who actually care about their jobs and the people their job affects (I still dont know if its effects or affects). Fortunately as a club I think we have got far more than our fair share of people who have that attitude who do their best every day to make things as good as possible. And I've only just realised there are keys to the ground. I figured that from the offices and box office area you could just walk into it somehow
It's easier to remember that effect is what the end product (effect) is - generally something has changed and the effect is created (think of special effects). Affect is the thing that is going to make the change happen. That doesn't cover it all but it gets harder to remember the difference if someone explains all the ins and outs and you're generally better with a vague workable idea unless you care enough to properly look into it. Basically, effect is almost always a noun and affect is almost always a verb.
Our box office staff are exceptional, like a lot of staff at the club. Hopefully they receive this kind of feedback
