Host another England Football game Male or Female again in whatever capacity , U18s , 23s etc ? I thought I’d seen somewhere that we’d never be allowed to host one again after the last U23s featuring our own John Stones . Apparently we only offered the great Travelling public the match day experience we endure week in week out . Just seen the Womens FC played in Rotherham and Sheffield with events taking place most of the day either in or around the ground and in the Town /City centre . It’s just what I’ve been told recently and haven’t heard anything before on the subject and not doubting my pal who told me but just wondered if it was official ?
If we ever want to host anything again we'd have to replace the west stand first as the neglect has caused us to go from a leading yorkhire stadium to one of the worst if not the worst in terms of facilities and visual appeal. You're right about the last game too. Boiling hot day and no drinks available I seem to remember. Traffic chaos all around the ground too with fans struggling to get in. It seems we've learned nothing
Remember attending a women's International at Oakwell. Think it was around Mother's Day - took my mum on a special hospitality ticket with a meal included.
I’d heard we wouldn’t get another gig from the FA but didn’t know the ins or outs of the reason they gave until other day after the Womens game in Rotherham. But I seem to remember some chaos with the travelling fans but didn’t know the extent or that that was the reason .
I remember watching the under 21’s beat Finland on a Friday night in the days of Darius Vassell, shola Ameobi etc. Enjoyed it, would be great to do something like that again but would take a lot of work. There’s 3 stadiums in South Yorkshire alone better equipped than us these days.
That U21 game was a shambles, I wouldn’t say never but the stadium and match day experience needs a drastic overhaul
We don't have the biscuits man on the inside of the FA anymore. Always thought we got England games at Oakwell because of him. Ed.. Barry whatshisface..
Yes that’s how I remember us getting the gig and by sounds after the lack of pre match/ HT activities and traffic/crowd control entering and leaving the Ground and Barnsley in general the FA were fuming to the extent even the biscuit man couldn’t stem .
That match organisation was a shambles and our ground was already decaying then. I don't think we've any chance of getting another when dozens of other places are much better suited. Think we only got them in the first place because of Barry Taylor.
Tbh I don’t think the state of the ground at the time was an issue as this would have been looked at previously imo . I think it was the lack of fan care as I stated above although I think you’re right about the state of the ground presently .
Doesn't surprise me. Theres national league clubs that can offer a better matchday experience and general organisation!
I remember attending that. It was a boiling hot day and they didn’t even have so much as water available. People were fuming. I remember being really excited that it was an International game and I don’t know what I was expecting but I went from disappointed that it just seemed like a normal game to being really embarrassed that it was actually worse than normal.
I remember they ran out so long before kick off that they had plenty of time to go to Asda and stock up and still be back to serve people before the game started but they couldn't be arsed
Why on earth would the FA ever choose Oakwell again when the NY Stadium is 10 miles away and is a far better stadium? Oakwell is depressingly decrepit these days.
