Stunning performance from Bobby that day. I hadn't realised he played in goal all his life as a kid. Should have realised given how he played. .
There is a story there that we don't know. Why Hill and Flitcroft wanted him out of the club was bizarre. Remember Flitcroft aggressive answering a Radio Sheffield reporter about Hassell too. Brilliant game that though, great to see Stones score and the England No 1 chants for Bobby.. None of it would have happened though if Ben Alnwick wasn't a ********.
The epitome of club stalwart. Fantastic player, even better bloke. Hope he stays with us for many a year
One of my all time favourite away trips. Brilliant away following all down one side of the pitch, glorious weather, Sir Bobby in goal, being there for Stones only goal for us and of course winning the tie. That one off of playing the league cup first round the Saturday before the league starts should have been a permanent thing. You go in to the league season off the back of a more meaningful game than a pre season friendly, get a bigger crowd than you would for a night game and save on things like powering the floodlights.
100%. Sort of a friendly, but something in it in the build up to the league starting the following week.
Yeah I remember a few years ago when we beat Notts Florist 1-0, in a 1st Round before the season starts cup tie. Cauley Woodrow scrambled the ball in by using his backside lol. It weren't goal of the season of course, but they all count.
Pretty sure it was Hill who gave him the captain’s armband. He hardly played at all in the Flitcroft/Wilson season, but Flitcroft had gone by the end of October (ish) and he couldn’t get a kick under Danny. Left that Summer even though we were relegated.
It says in the article it was Hill who wanted rid. It was a quote from Bobby himself mate so was 100% Hill who initially wanted him gone
Wilson talked Hassell up when he first arrived. He brought him in out of the cold (Hassell made just one sub appearances prior to Wilson taking over in December) and selected him in his first starting 11 away at Leeds. He praised him for his performance and selected him again in the next match at home to Bolton. And that was it, Wilson never played him again and never even brought him on as sub until the final game of the season for a 10 minute cameo. Football (and the world) is full of silly conspiracy theories. Everyone and their dog has been blamed for the Hex deal. But something happened to very quickly change Wilson's mind about Hassell as he went from first on the team sheet and the subject of glowing reviews to never mentioned and never played. I don't know what it was but it wasn't his performances in those two games.
