Great player - remember him as a stand-out performer when I first got into football. Like Futch would certainly have gained more England caps with a well known club. RiP

Cracking player, who was in what was perhaps Southampton's greatest side

Sad news. Think he played against us for Boro in that great cup tie at Ayresome park in 80-81.

    Sad news.
Didn't he play for Soton when we beat them there in the FA Cup donkeys years ago?

David Armstrong was a brilliant player, loyal to his clubs, emphasised by his appearances for Middlesbrough and Southampton. I remember the clamour for him to be in England squads,Kevin Keegan always said he should be in the squad. I didn't realise he was older than me.

From the days when reading the Middlesbrough team sheet was like spitting out tin tacks:

"Armstrong, Hickton, Stiles, Platt, Craggs........!" :D

I think him and Craig Johnston played. Armstrong ran the show for the first half hour and he was indeed one of the better players of the 80's.
    RIP

Yes he was Boro’s stand out player in the game unlike the diving cheat Johnston who went on the floor if anyone got within two yards of him . RIP
