No need to go straight in at the buyout fee if a lower fee can be negotiated.

All relative to the player and division, but you'll often see the top players leaving for c. 25% less than the buyout in their contract. The figure in the contract is often pointed at to get them to raise their offer more, knowing nobody will ever really hit it.

But surely, if we actually think he would be a significant addition to the squad, it's a bit pathetic if we are risking some other club nipping in ahead of us, just for the sake of a few thousand quid. If we don't think he's worth £300k, why are we even interested in him?

Pathetic is a bit harsh. Why would you spend money you don't need to?

I hope you're the next person who ends up buying my house.

I guess so. But if there's as much interest as is being reported (although that could be agent talk), we're running a risk by letting it drag on.

If I really wanted the house and thought it was worth the asking price, I would pay it, for fear of losing it. If I didn't think it was worth the asking price, I wouldn't be looking at it.

Too much of a gamble at champ level I'd have thought, well for the majority of those teams. Rotherham most likely to shop at that level based on what their budget will be.

Surprised posh haven't nipped in for him yet.

We’ve shown our hand early now with a crap bid. Expect other clubs to be alerted and nip in before us. He sounds just the type of player Posh would be interested in. Wouldn’t surprise me to see him end up there.

Having looked at a couple of videos of him, he looks exactly like what we're missing. He's in a similar mould to Carlton Morris or Kieffer Moore.

You've got more money than me then. I'd always get the best deal I can, especially if I knew that there was a deal to be done.

Paying over the odds for something, when you might not need to, feels daft to me. Unless we're talking Euro 2022 Final tickets.....

Every lower league player seems to have 'Championship interest' when reported in the media. Remember when we had a BBS meltdown because Cadden hadn't signed on the Friday?

He was definitely going to Preston or Wednesday because we'd made him a low ball offer. Duff was definitely going to Blackpool for a similar reason. Almost every Premier League team this window has had a back and forth over a transfer fee, so why not us? £75k to us is £10m to West Ham or Man Utd.

It's obviously difficult for us fans to get the full facts. We'll just have to see what happens. We might sign the Salford lad and he may turn out to be rubbish. On the other hand, he could be a terrific player.

It really is. Especially in the social media age of online gossip and with so much use of the term 'undisclosed'.

We do have a habit of always reacting negatively or predicting the worst though. We're annoyed when rumours have us bidding for players, and we're equally annoyed when the rumours are about players leaving. It does feel like we tend to be pretty quick to find a fault with something.

If other clubs are interested in a player, they will be on alert already. We can’t sign a player without making a bid

Is that because there's usually a lot of faults to be found?

Possibly so. And definitely in some cases. But I think fairly often as well some people just like to look for them and always assume the worst/glass half empty approach.

The opportunity to haggle and get a great deal was a few months ago though surely not now?

Salford have set a release clause for a reason and they have no reason to accept anything less. He's also started the season really well with 4 goals in 6 already and is surely a key player for Salford and with very very little time left in the window you'd be leaving them with very little time to get a replacement.

In that case if you want the player surely you'd not waste time and just pay the release clause if you thought this player was the right fit for us. 300k is hardly a eye watering fee. I know our financial position isn't good but in L1/L2 football that's not an absurd fee.

We've all tried to save a few quid and bid lower on things for a good deal weather it be a house, car or something random from eBay etc. But according to that tweet that was shared, we were well below the 300k clause so it sounds like we were being more than a bit cheeky. We can't confirm that for sure as we'll never know so I'm not going to criticise too much for that as we will never be told the details of the actual bid.
