Last time Duff said that….. Fingers crossed this time though. Hopeful of three coming in before the Wednesday game.
I'm starting to hope we don't sign anyone considering the quality we've brought in so far. It will just take us further into the mire. I'd prefer Marsh and Aitchison giving their all than some thug elbowing the opposition, arguing with officials, tripping up over his own feet and taking home 10 times their wage.
Marsh and Aitchison will only stay longer on the pitch to keep us down where we are now. I've seen this film "No Way Out" and I think Jasper Moon was in it.
I wouldn't argue with that, but at the least they're honest and work hard, and I don't trust those in charge of recruitment to get any better. Actually, I fully expect them to sign much, much worse.
Josh Martin from Norwich winger. Played on loan at Donny. Decent stats. Not sure anything else about him
We need minimum 4 players who are 'plug and play' capable at L1 level. I'd be (pleasantly) surprised if we got that both in terms of numbers and capability. What I don't want though is more 'Token Tedic's' - nothing against the lad but Jalo showed infinitely more in 15 minutes than Slob did in 75. Much better to bring our own youngsters through than try vainly to repair someone else's. Let's see what the next 2 days bring but as things stand, based on assessment across the first 9 games in total, this is by some margin the least capable squad of senior players in my 44 years watching Barnsley. There may have been worse individual players from time to time but nothing as collectively uninspiring. The fact that Duff is a proven competent coach at this level may help us stay afloat but I fear even he may find it difficult to get a tune regularly enough out of what he has been given to work with. Let's hope there's several positive developments in the next 48 hours or so.
Thats another one of our problems, buying players who are injured or out of form, and who need time to settle down etc. At this moment we haven't got the time for this sort of thing, and patience is wearing very thin. Duff is having his hands tied here as we speak.
interestingly we had a similar conversion between my son and I. Maybe we try to get through to December with what we have got. Im not sure being good enough for 10th or 15th makes that much difference. We really need a recruitment strategy and skill / experience to help us achieve it. Ive been an advocate of a director of football to allow better focus on the footballing side and manage the comings and goings better. The other two areas i see as crucial are Operations ( facilities, match day experience, logistics, infrastructure etc) and Commercial ( sponsorship, community activities, etc). the CEO can double hat into one of the latter roles.
