I'm pretty sure you know that you haven't got it right. There isn't a country in the world which allocates constituency representatives based on a proportional vote of the entire population.

PR is certainly complicated and I acknowledged in my post that I wasn't too sure I'd got it right.

So in Ireland it works like this.

There are 10 candidates. You vote for them all in number of preference, for example you are a Labour fan and vote Labour 1, Lib Dem 2, Green 3 etc down to Tory 9 and UKIP 10.

Your vote goes to your number one candidate in the first round and the candidate with the least votes is eliminated. If your candidate is eliminated your vote goes to your second choice and so on until the numbers are whittled down.

It leads to a lot of more centrist coalition governments and a lot of compromise which is good in that the country wouldn't be constantly dragged from one side to the other, but bad in that it is slow in making decisive decisions and there can be a lot of infighting within a coalition. In the UK the centre and left would love it as there is only one real right wing party whereas the centre and left is split a number of different ways.

 

I totally get what you're saying in your last paragraph but have difficulty getting my head round the mechanics of the system you describe.
Presumably in countries with PR the electorate are happy with it as there doesn't seem to be any great opposition.

(o/t In the Senedd each constituency has a Member and each constituency has a Regional member. The latter is elected on a system of PR. Ynys Mon has a Plaid Member in the Senedd - a Tory MP in Westminster and a Labour Member representing the Island in the Senedd.)

 

Next health secretary they reckon. Bring back Hancock. She looks the picture of health doesn't she? Overweight, smoking and drinking. The face of health in our government...It's amazing how many politicians are jack of all trades, masters of nothing with now many different roles within a cabinet they can be moved to.

Edit; It's debatable which of the alternative voting system is the best but let's face it any one of them would be orders of magnitude better than what we have now. This shows how many votes per MP each party got in the last 3 elections.
