I would never advocate intervention militarily in another middle eastern country. It achieved nothing and we got next to no thanks for it. In some ways understandably. We don't have a good record of meddling in the middle east and a lot of the problems there stem back to when Britain and France did. They have to sort their own problems out. However, people who are fleeing oppression have a right to asylum. They have a right to come here and we have a right to reject their application if we think it's not justified. I think it has been proven on here before that other countries DO take more asylum seekers than we do. In the latest chart I found with a quick google it showed us significantly lagging behind Germany, France and Spain and in 5th position. It's also been shown that, overall, immigrants make a positive contribution to the economy. Leave your prejudices to one side for a while and try actually digging out the facts.
Why does anyone have to fight though? Can't everyone have a right to choose a better life, especially when British foreign policy has hindered this?
Afghanistan is a tribal area - no one in a village in Helmand gives two fks about the state of Afghanistan, they do what their tribe tells them to do and no more, its a completely false comparison with The Ukraine.
Mine is at royal school of artillery in lugershall, Salisbury, doing same. Kind of symmetry that the Russians attacked Salisbury and it's now training up Ukrainian troops to attack them.
Am I the only one who started reading your post and thought you were talking about our side last season?
Don't know how you can make a statement like this.. seriously. When you only ever get one sides veiw.
You have to treat all reports from a war zone with caution but, seeing as the Russians have confirmed they've withdrawn from the areas the Ukrainians claim to have retaken I think we can safely say Russia got a bloody nose.
The Royal School of Artillery has been at Larkhill for as long as I can remember and I believe it is still there. Why did you say Ludgershall? I only took an interest because I had ten of my 24 years RAF Service on Salisbury Plain - Old Sarum, Boscombe Down and Upavon.
sorry, not quite sure what you mean. do you mean the stories are false, or that Russia aren't the bad guys in all this. or summat else?
Is that the Afghans who defeated the British in the 19th century and the Russians in the 20th? Those cowards? You really talk some unbelievable crap.
Yeah you're right, it's still there, I only said ludgershall because I remember him mentioning he was somewhere beginning with L near Tidworth and he does that many courses it's hard to keep up. I spent some time living in Wiltshire in the 80s and knew someone who was based at ludgershall and put two and two together.
Jesus. Had to open ‘ignored’ content for this thread to make sense, and it reminded me why I started ignoring him in the first place. Silly sausage.
A lot of brass, has been spent on the Afghanistan armed forces, they got trained to a very good standard, well armed and well equipped, A lot of brass in Equipment was left to an Army of 200,000 plus, and they ran to the hills like lambs to the slaughter, the Taliban now control this vast amount of Equipment.
Our entire defence budget for this year is £42bn. A trillion £s is 24 years of that, given that the budget is increased every year, for us to have given trillions of ££s of equipment that’d be our entire defence budget for 48 (2 trillion) or 72 years (3 trillion). And that’s ignoring the fact that 50 years ago the defence budget would only have been around £10bn. I accept we did give training, and possibly gave weapons, but we have also abandoned people over there who directly helped our armed forces and therefore have targets on their heads. Being totally militarily overwhelmed does not equate to being a coward. Throwing yourself into a fight you can’t possibly win helps no one.
