The bookies have us odds against to win this one, which I find odd considering we're at home, in marginally better form, higher up the table, and playing a side who we were two leagues apart from last season. Regardless, we're still available at 11/10. Port Vale have made their return to the 3rd tier for the first time in 5 years, and have had a mixed start, picking up 8 points from 10 games. Their only points on their travels, came at basement club Burton Albion, and was a relatively comfortable 2-0 victory. They were the 2nd best away side in league 2 last season however, amassing as many points away as they did at home. Historically, our home games with Port Vale have been reasonably tight. In this century, we've won 2, drawn 2 and lost 2. With all 6 of those games having fewer than 4 goals in them. Even our overall head to head record reads as 46 Barnsley wins, 46 Vale wins and 19 draws. I fancy us to edge this one. We've played relatively well against the teams we're expected to be favourites against so far, and in our last two games as underdogs, we've shown that something is close to clicking for us under Michael Duff. The 10 days rest has given us the chance to get a few players closer to fitness, and I hope hasn't disrupted the momentum we built up with the win at Hillsborough. I'm going to stick with the theme of tight games between us and Vale, and go for 1-0 with Cole getting the winner (presuming the game is on).
Surely the game has to go ahead. If it does I say 2-0 reds. Cole and a late settler from Josh Martin.
Bit worried about lost momentum after the weekend match getting called off - I think we might have put a proper run together over the next few games. I'm hovering between 1-0 and 1-1. Hopefully the former....
Shame the Portsmouth game was called off. I really fancied us to win that. They have won 5 on the trot and are due to lose, and our confidence should be high after the Wednesday game. I still fancy us to win tonight, though, oddly, I am not quite as confident as I would have been on Saturday. Nevertheless, I will make a tentative 2-0 prediction.
