Didn’t realise Pompey were that far ahead!! Anyway two points worse off but it’s fair to say we had an easier run of games back then…
I was hoping someone would post that as I'd been wondering myself how the current side matches up. A couple of observations - if we'd held on against Port Vale we'd actually have more points than Stendel's side. To even be within a point of their total is mind-blowing, considering the quality in that side. Put them back together now and they'd finish mid-table in the Championship. I don't think that most of the current lot are anywhere near that in terms of quality, nor will they ever be, but the work-rate and organisation on Saturday were outstanding. Duff really is doing a sterling job Look at where Scunthorpe are now!
After 20 games we had 35 points and Pompey 47. So if we get 18 points from the next 10 we are in line with the last automatic promotion season. breaking it down in to 10 game chunks we went: 1-10 19pts 1.9 ppg 11-20 16pts 1.6 ppg 21-30 24pts 2.4 ppg 31-40 20pts 2.0 ppg 41-46 12pts 2.0 ppg Automatic promotion came at 1.98 ppg. Play-offs was 1.6 ppg. So currently we are on target for a play off spot but it’s early days yet!
To prove how early it still is in the season, Luton were 11 points behind Portsmouth at that stage, about a quarter of the way through the season. They've finished the season 6 points ahead of them. That's a 17 point swing in the final 35 games of the year, and it's not as though Pompey completely capitulated either. The top 5 that season were particularly strong. There was a 12 point gap between Sunderland in 5th and Doncaster in 6th come the end of the season. I wouldn't be surprised if this season went the same way, we've just to keep picking up points. I don't actually think we're performing anywhere near where we did under Stendel just yet, which is encouraging as there's clearly room for improvement.
Of course last season you needed a bit more than 1.6ppg for the playoffs as Wycombe were 6th with 83 points = 1.8ppg Automatic was only one point less than we got though so still 1.96ppg In any case I am pleasantly surprised at where we are after 10 games - not sure if we are good enough for promotion at the moment but I am more optimistic than I was before the season started
Maybe another positive is the predicted league table and who we have already played in those first 10 games. Five three eight run a decent stats based predictor and have the top six of Ipswich, Wednesday, Portsmouth, Derby, Plymouth and us. We’ve already played four out of the five so our first 10 games you could argue were against better quality opposition. All this positivity on a Monday morning!
Especially when the 4 we have played have all been away! To counter your untyke like positivity some seasons we have played far better against the top sides than against the bottom end cloggers. It wouldnt be the first Barnsley side to have a better record against the top half than the bottom half. Though its far too early to draw that conclusion - only Wycombe in the bottom half have really done a number on us and I dont expect them to stay there
We all need to keep up this positivity. It translates onto the pitch. It's 5hit or bust for me. Promotion no matter how it's achieved. I'd like us to keep battering teams like we are at the minute though. Really optimistic right now. More so now the board are putting their hands in their pockets. I might do the same and start taking in games when I've got some spare dollar and no other commitments. Fancy bringing along George and Laura too.
We have also started being more clinical in front of the goal . Keep banging them in and we won't be far off contrary to what I said after the Wycombe defeat! .
Very good Steve get t, next home game before cold weather, mind yer it'll still be cheaper to go to game then stop home un put heating on lol.
How old is George? I've just got my 11 year old daughter her first season ticket as it was a no-brainer at a tenner. She doesn't really get some of the finer points of the game but loves the shouting, goals and general rowdiness. I'm planning on taking her to an away game soon as I reckon she'll love it. My missus comes as well, although she tends to complain about how freezing it is between mid-September and the beginning of April!
Portsmouth generally blow it tho, mate at work so sure they're walking this league, my £50 says we finish above them, I'm down playing our hopes, whilst quietly confident, but he's giving it Billy big bōllocks.
He's three on October 13th. Don't know where it's gone. I haven't been since the Fulham game in 2019. More confident he'd sit through it now.
Just keeping the comparisons going, does anybody know where we were after the first 10 games, in our other two Lg One promotion seasons ?. Which I think were in 05-06 with Andy Ritchie, and in 15-16 with Lee Johnson/Heckybum.
