I was working for the TUC at the time the NMW was looking to be introduced and helped compile the evidence that was submitted to the Low Pay Commission and you are right the same people are making the same fallacious at arguments now as they did then around affordability

To me if you can’t afford to pay your employees and need the state to subsidise you by paying them benefits then you don’t have a viable business model.

I know that sounds harsh and smaller businesses should be supported but you have FTSE 100 companies like Capita making a fortune and paying their CEO millions while the state subsidises their employees wages. How can that be right?

Labour has 17-point lead over Tories - YouGov survey
    [IMG]
    Ben Quinn

Good morning from a chilly Liverpool where many delegates to the Labour conference are waking up to the news that their party has take its biggest poll lead over the Tories for more than 20 years.

The YouGov survey – for the Times – put Labour 17 points ahead, the party’s greatest lead since the firm started polling in 2001.

Thanks to the Tories being an absolute shower, rather than any strong leadership from Sir Keir. Complacency very misplaced.

Can’t be too complacent , remember Corbyn had a good lead and people raving over his policies , nationalisation etc .
That was until the Tory Press and Media got its act together and mesmerised the numbskulls especially in the red wall whet some of them even believed they’d made their own minds up despite the Tory social media picking at their little brain cells .

Rubbish! There won't be any bridges since lack of investment in infrastructure means they will either have collapsed or be deemed unsafe and blocked off.

Not harsh at all IMO ...My posts #36 and #39 expressed exactly the same point. another method of transferring wealth from taxpayer to business. Profits awarded to businesses and shareholders, whilst the risks are borne by taxpayers is morally wrong.

And who would you blame if Labour were 17 points behind?

I'd genuinely like to read it. Many people think differently always good to hear an alternative viewpoint on it.

I'm all for paying people a real wage for their hard work. Not like when I did my YTS at Barnsley Health Authority in the 90's and worked as hard as all the others around earning a real wage whilst I got my 35p per hour.

That was when there were 100 applicants for every job. If you look now and are prepared to start at the bottom and work up, you can literally take your pick of where to work.

Isn't the point that even those at the bottom should be able to buy a house?

No it shouldn't. It didn't stop me from eventually doing so on pretty much relative income to house prices as many people now. I didn't even have a deposit at all but got creative in my offer structure for my first house.

Surely we would see house prices increase partly as a result?

I don't understand, are you saying that people on minimum wage shouldn't be able to buy a house?

No quite the opposite. I was making a comparison of me buying my first house. I missed out by a couple of years on getting a bargain. Same house I bought had nearly doubled in value from 2 to 3 years earlier.
With every penny accounted for, I approached the vendor and offered the full asking price if they would pay my deposit. Ended up doing the deal.

Everybody should have the opportunity to buy.

I was just saying that if wages increase, so will house prices. You don't agree?

    same bloke, he’s useless.
The bloke who I think is ineffectual. Burton’s shop window dummy could oppose Liz Truss and do a job at the minute. Just Sit back & watch them implode. Hard work comes if the economy turns & he comes under scrutiny for his plans. long way to an election yet.

    Sorry, misunderstood.

It will have an effect but it's still needed. I suspect the effect on house prices of raising lower wages could be mitigated by building more starter homes.

I hope you're not right. I've had enough of the longer walk to and from Oakwell because of the closure of the bridges at the Interchange. The Market bridge can't come soon enough! :D

Do you really believe that most people take the word of a newspaper (left or right) over what they hear themselves?
I can see for myself whilst watching live footage of debates what a bunch of twatlings the tory party have been and continue to be and that is based on what I see and hear them say or do. It therefore angers me that up to this point of receiving a massive gift from these shysters that labour have stood meekly by. It's time for labour to act like adults and strike the Tory' down and they can't afford to waste a day trying to do it between now and the election.

Of course they do and the Photo of Ed Milliband eating a bacon sandwich is but one example of how his popularity eroded after appearing in the Tory press .
If people thinking for themselves was a factor the Tories would never have got the thumping vote especially in the red wall areas given what they have done to the NHS and other precious institutions and even neglected the towns that voted them and made working people have to depend on benefits to heighten Tory Donors profits .
I’d say that’s a damning fact that lots of people get their opinions from the media/press and if they didn’t and still voted for this toxic self enriching set of greedy lieing ******** then they should hang their heads in shame .
